A hypnotic journey through death, that by extension proposes that movies are ghosts, too.
The titular Boonmee is suffering from kidney failure. Before he dies he is visited by relatives, first living, than spirits. There are rich allusions to Thai cinema and culture that often went over my head. But the subtle themes of humanity's diminishing connection to the natural world are matched by other clever contrasts I won't divulge here.
Viewers used to the Hollywood cinema we so frequently discuss will have to reset their inner viewing clock to a more gradual pace. For there's a slow generosity in the long camera shots that allow us to gaze into the jungles and the dark faces of its spiritual denizens. If one can let themselves accept the proceedings, they may find themselves richly rewarded with the ruminations they find while staring into the void. I know I did.
