Re: Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever
B-/C+Considering it has been shot in 2007 and been sitting on the shelf ever since then you've gotta ask yourself - is it THAT bad? Well, I for one, don't think so. I went in with low expectations and got pretty much what I expected if not even a bit more. It's not as good as the first film, but surprisingly it's not a huge step downin quality either. The biggest issue is that the characters are utterly underdeveloped and disposable. Now I'd argue that Cabin Fever's characters were quite obnoxious and I didn't care much for them, but at least there were some attempts made to develop them. Here you simply don't care. Which also leads me to the second negative point about it - it's how the whole movie plays out. The main action seems to end after about 75-80 minutes and then we still get to see 10 or more minutes of stuff that has barely anything to do with the rest of the film and feels unneeded. This is all the more annoying as the main plot thread seems simply cut short, very abruptly.
The "plot" here revolves around the flesh-eating disease making its way into some drinking water that ends up at a high school prom = BLOOD GALORE.
Now this is where the film definitely makes up for some of its shortcomings. If anyone of you have seen Cabin Fever and thought it was brutal...well it'll seem like Bambi once you have seen the sequel. The amount of blood is ten times as high and the scenes range from rotten (literary) tits over a guy glueing his detached fingernail back to his finger to a saw being applied to an infected arm and a close-up shot of blood and pus coming out of a penis (no, I'm not kidding). I have heard quite a few gasps during the film. You can make yourself a picture of how violent it is by looking at these official stills from the film:

Now herein lies the film's problem. It seems to never be able to decide whether it wants to be a horror comedy or a more serious horror flick and it is lacking a bit in both departments (though definitely leaning towards the former). I also thought that bringing back the character of Winston from the first film as a rather unnecessary idea and he's really wasted big time here. Speaking of the first film - the director Ti West never misses a chance to make some reference to it, whether it's having someone doing some random martial arts moves, or showing pancakes or having a guy in a bunny suit here (those who have seen the first film will understand the references). In any case, the movie is somewhat entertaining, utterly disgusting (not in a bad way, though) and, yes, totally disposable, while making for a decent party viewing.
