Post Re: City Island
City Island takes the dysfunctional family formula and avoids typical cliches to become a fun and overly wonderful piece of work. City Island is a true ensemble film as just about all the main cast does a strong job. The film follows the Rizzo family led by Vince (Andy Garcia), a corrections officer who is also an aspiring actor at the same time trying out for a new Martin Scorsese film. He hasn't let his wife Joyce (Julianna Margulies) know yet that he is taking acting classes every week and simply says he is going to play another poker game every week. At the same time though, Vince realizes that one of the inmates, Tony (Steven Strait), who is ready to be released on parole but has no family around, is actually the son of a women who he left alone pregnant some 20+ years before hand. Now Vince brings Tony to his home and wants him to work on a new shed bathroom but still without telling him the true reason why he brought Tony home. Vince and Joyce's daughter Vivian (Dominik García-Lorido) comes home from college as well but has a secret she keeps from the family. Then there is their son Vince Jr. (Ezra Miller) who has a liking to obese women and tries to get the attention of his neighbor. Besides the last of the plots described, which gets a bit odd at times, all the stories work wonderfully and are brought together beautifully, and with some strong bits of laughter, at the end. Margulies and Garcia stand out as does Emily Mortimer who plays Vince's acting partner Molly. There are plenty of laughs along the way but also a very satisfying story. Once the film ends, it is sad to end a connection made with these characters because the story can go on further and still be as enjoyable. Hopefully this can get some sort of awards recognition such as an ensemble award because the cast really help make this film as well. ***1/2
