Re: Iron Maiden: Flight 666
\m/Instant best documentary of 2009.
I'm not the prayin' sort, but if there's a better doc than
Iron Maiden: Flight 666 this year, I'll get down on my knees and sing Hallelujah!!!
Awesome. (...and I say that in the full 80's meaning of the word.)
Yeah... you're probably not gonna be lucky enough to see this in a proper kick ass movie theatre in first run, but the day will come when you'll have the choice to see it. Maybe on PPV, or in some chick's DVD collection, or maybe you'll rent it off iTunes, or on some crazyfuck future TCM I haven't even dreamt of yet. No matter. I highly recommend you spend two hours watching the most brilliant business plan ever roll out, or I should say... soar out! It's a mind-blowing fusion of real world skills working with an optimized set of tools under the helm of a talented group of obviously very with-it human beings. Anyone who enjoys seeing a job well done, will surely enjoy seeing this.
All that, with the thrill of hearing and seeing the band's classic repertoire live, performed especially for an audience often hearing their music for the first time (like me) and one that is getting younger and younger every tour. Nevermind that by 2025 they will be playing afternoon shows with the Teletubbies, to an audience of toddlers, their MILF's, and a contingent of drooling old Rockers in robotic life support wheelchairs. The important thing is that they'll be making a fortune doing something they love.
Yup... I fell in love with a certain iron maiden tonight, and this movie was the love letter that seduced me. Now of course, I'm going to have to go see them live next time they fly to Xatar. So... beyond being an exquisite example of the documentary art - - as a marketing piece, it is a finely tuned instrument in the hands of a maestro. It's clearly been "Steve-ized". Fan-freakin-tastic!
Just a word of caution. Bruce Dickinson will blow your mind in this film. I'm not kidding. Whatever your expectation of what that might mean, will never match up with the Bruce Dickinson you'll see in this movie. And that's not to slight the holy Steve Harris, but his role is more inside. Then Dave, Nicko, Janick, and Adrian and a whole planeload of roadies, managers, promoters, and security, jet their way to triumph in this six week round the world
tour of the future.
I'm still in awe.

(Heh... and what a wild contrast, fortuitously seeing
Iron Maiden: Flight 666 right after seeing the
other brilliant recent Rockumentary:
Anvil!: the Story of Anvil. These two films should be seen as part of any aspiring human beings' basic education. They will give you a very elucidating perspective on the divergent paths one may choose in one's professional life.)
