 The Serpent's Egg
The Serpent's Egg Quote: The Serpent's Egg is a 1977 English and German film directed by Ingmar Bergman and starring David Carradine as Abel Rosenberg, which is set in 1920s Berlin. This was Bergman's one and only "Hollywood" film. The title is taken from a line spoken by Brutus in Shakespeare's Julius Caesar:
And therefore think him as a serpent's egg
Which hatch'd, would, as his kind grow mischievous;
And kill him in the shell.

 Re: The Serpent's Egg
oops indeed
It's an ugly, soulless, incomprehensible work. Bergman seems totally lost and out of his element; it's uncharacteristically broad and dumb. The foreshadowing and thematics at play couldn't have been made more obvious if David Carradine turned and talked to the camera. We get it, Ingmar: the terrible conditions in Germany led to the rise of the Nazis. Thanks for that.
Carradine is awful but Liv Ullmann, somehow, seems even worse. At least Carradine's awfulness fits the awfulness of the film; Ullmann just seems as lost and out-of-place as her director. The dialogue, which would work so well in any other setting, just feels wrong here. And even Sven Nyvkist seems to have lost his touch. It's just a colossal disaster.
My prof tried to justify it as befitting of the ugliness of Berlin in the '20s. It didn't work. I hated this film.
