Black Narcissus
Black NarcissusQuote: Black Narcissus is a 1947 film by the British director-writer team of Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger, based on the novel of the same name by Rumer Godden. It is a psychological drama about the emotional tensions within a convent of nuns in an isolated Himalayan valley, and stars Deborah Kerr, Sabu, David Farrar and Flora Robson, and features Esmond Knight, Jean Simmons and Kathleen Byron.

Re: Black Narcissus
The timing of this thread is suspicious. Apparently Kathleen Byron just died.
God help anyone who comes in here with an unkind word. This is the single best example of matte work in the history of anything. When I first saw it I was floored by the location photography. When I learned later that it was entirely shot in a studio, I shit myself.

Jack Cardiff's still around. A true genius. And he's been in films since WWI just about!

Re: Black Narcissus
I noticed her death as well. However, I Netflixed it a couple of weeks ago and it only arrived the day of her death, so the circumstances were completely unrelated. Still, she makes a good avatar in her best scene.
Other than some of the matte paintings (I say some, 90% of them were gorgeous) and Jean Simmons (WTF?) the film was wonderful. As to Byron and Kerr, damn were they hot. This was my first Powell film, but I enjoyed it immensely.

Re: Black Narcissus
Not the stodgy nun's tale I was (foolishly) expecting; it's full of life and vigour and colour, even before Sister Ruth does away with her habit and puts on lipstick. Powell said it was the most erotic film he ever made, and I have a hard time arguing that, even without seeing the vast majority of his work; the exotic setting, emotionally-charged story, and incredibly alive performances all reinforce this.
And, holy fuck, what cinematography. Shot in a studio? You've gotta be shitting me.
