AMUSEMENT - 7/10 (B-)

A solid horror flick that has some great sets, a nice atmosphere, and some creepy moments.

There's one solid scare scene in the film, and it comes twenty minutes in. The structure is shoddy, the conventions obvious (you can keep your CGI lightning flashes, too), and the killer is flat-out annoying by the half hour mark. We get it, dude, you like laughing. There came a point just over an hour in where I texted a friend and asked, "Is this goddamn movie going anywhere?"

It'd rate an F if not for the solid "clown room" scene, and even that goes just where you expect it to.

I was extremely underwhelmed by this film having heard good things about it from several other horror fans. It is just so...conventional. There are some rather stylish choices in its direction and there are a few very atmospheric scenes, but the victims are frankly annoying, the back story is nothing special and the film just feels so empty. No real scares, no emotional involvement here. And as The Dark Shape has said - the killer becomes annoying pretty fast rather than threatening.
