Quote:
Twilight Zone: The Movie is a 1983 science fiction horror film produced by Steven Spielberg and John Landis as a theatrical version of The Twilight Zone, a 1959 and '60s TV series created by Rod Serling. It starred Dan Aykroyd, Albert Brooks, Vic Morrow, Scatman Crothers, Kathleen Quinlan and John Lithgow. Burgess Meredith, who starred in several episodes of the original series, took on Serling's position as narrator, although unlike Serling he did not appear on screen, nor did he receive screen credit. His name did appear in the end credits.

The film remade three classic episodes of the original series and included one original story. John Landis directed the prologue and the first segment, Steven Spielberg directed the second, Joe Dante the third, and George Miller directed the final segment. The promotional song from this movie, "Nights Are Forever", written by Jerry Goldsmith with lyricist John Bettis, and sung by Jennifer Warnes, is heard briefly during the jukebox scene in the opening segment with Vic Morrow.

The film garnered notoriety for the helicopter crash which took the lives of actor Vic Morrow and two child actors, Myca Dinh Le and Renee Shin-Yi Chen, during the filming of Landis's segment. The deaths led to high-profile legal action, although in the subsequent trial no one was held criminally culpable for the accident.

The prologue and the last segment are both awesome (especially when they're tied together), but the other three are pretty lame. Particularly Spielberg's. What a retarded piece of storytelling.

As a whole it isn't very good. The prologue with Dan Aykroyd and Albert Brooks is decent. It gets the film off to a good start. The John Landis segement is a complete waste of time which is sad considering what happened during the filming of it. Actually after reading up on that a little bit and watching the video of the accident, I'm kind of surprised that Landis was able to work after that. Anyways, once Morrow shows up at the Klan meeting, we know what's going on and it stops working. I stopped paying attention after that. The Spielberg segment is doesn't work that well either. It's watchable and it's kind of enjoyable, but it doesn't really go anywhere and you forget about it the moment it ends. Joe Dante's segment is where the film begins to recover somewhat. The story works fully and the kid is effectively creepy. It becomes a little long in the end when both he and a very young Kathleen Quinlan end up in purgatory only to have him recreate everything again, but for the most part it's pretty good. The film ends on a high note though. The fourth segment works the best mostly thanks to John Lithgow. It's funny, it's well acted by Lithgow, it's creepy and it has a decent twist. After watching it I now need to see the original with Shatner.

So we've got.....

Segment One (Landis): *1/2
Segment Two (Spielberg): ** - Easily the worst thing Spielberg has directed (haven't seen Always).
Segment Three (Joe Dante): ***
Segment Four (George Miller): ****

Whole Product: **1/2

This movie was going to be at least very well done. Spielberg disowned the film and threw out his original Trick Or Treating Zone story and directed the easiest one he knew. Really sad how bad that accident ruined the potential of the movie. The script to Spielberg's was really awesome. The opening is strong, and the later two segments are entertaining. But Segment one, even with the original ending, is just silly. Becoming Jewish in Nazi Germany or a black person being chased by the KKK are bizarre twists and had good potential, but the time warping doesn't give anytime for it to be established.

They have the footage of Morrow's death on youtube now, he really died for nothing.

Its a very interesting story to read, but sadly the movie isn't as interesting.

The clip comes from some strange documentary. You can't really see much. I've tried.

It was used as evidence during the 6 year court case against Spielberg and especially Landis who hired foreign kids to avoid child labor laws.
