Re: I've Loved You So Long
Philippe Claudel's directorial debut was impressive. But unfortunately, that couldn't be said with his script. Well, just the ending, to be clear (and few here and there, to be frank). The truth is unconvincing, even with the excuse of being a character-study film which was brilliantly handled. And few sub-plots seemed to be somehow unnecessary. But even with these minor errors, Kristin Scott Thomas' performance will make you unable to hate this film. It wasn't only her best work (to date), but one of the best female performance of the year. Not to be forgotten, Elsa Zylberstein along with every actor in this film, were pretty good as well. A-

Re: I've Loved You So Long
Eh, it's the definition of a middling, forgettable drama, who's reputation is saved by Kristin Scott-Thomas' admittedly very good performance, and by being teh foreign.
I suppose a big problem is Claudel - I can maybe forgive him for having all the camera/lighting/etc. craft or input of a Showtime movie, but besides that, he just fails at making the unravelling of this character's past and life involving or interesting at all. Whether it's the pacing or editing or whatever, as a story this thing just has no flow. I can see how this movie could've worked under a better hand, like a suspense boiler in reverse, but I felt nothing. As well, it just feels rather detached, I didn't get connected emotionally with these people. That may be intentional to represent Juliette's detachment re-entering the world and her easing back into it, mirroring the not so subtle improvement in her appearance over the film.
As for the ending, I knew it beforehand, so yea. I don't think it's a copout or anything, but it does make the character a little more conventional if you will.
Mostly an average film
2.5/5

I'VE LOVED YOU SO LONG - 8/10 (B+)
A very good film. Kristin Scott Thomas gives a wonderful, understated performance. She’s absolutely fascinating and her French is flawless. She has done some first-rate work in the past, but nothing has topped her performance in this movie.
Definitely recommended.
