Alice in den Städten [Alice in the Cities]
Alice in the CitiesQuote: Alice in the Cities (German: Alice in den Städten) is a 1974 German road movie directed by Wim Wenders. This was the first part of Wenders' "Road Movie Trilogy" which included The Wrong Move (1975) and Kings of the Road (1976). German, English and Dutch. Shot in haunting black and white by Robby Müller with several long scenes without dialogue.

Re: Alice in den Städten [Alice in the Cities]
I quite loved this one. It's dark and melancholy and depressing, so of course it fits right into my current cinematic state of mind. Whereas Kikujiro handled these themes of alienation and desolation by glossing them over with light comedy, this one tackles them head on, using gritty black-and-white cinematography, a roving camera, long stretches without dialogue, and a terrific, haunting score. It all serves the purpose of putting us right in the mindset of these two individuals (specifically Phil), and it works perfectly.
There's also Wenders' trademark use of American pop culture put to great use, specifically the music on the radio, as well as a genuine relationship formed between the two leads. The end is rather heartbreaking, even as it fits into the general tone of the film. I had to choke back tears (not really, but y'know).
Great flick.

It's superbly made and the two leads work great off of each other. It all flows by rather smoothly while allowing itself to be laid back with the characters while also showing the distinct contrasts between child and adult. I could have watch a lot more with these characters but do appreciate the potential open endings it left.
