Chapter 27

Quote:
Chapter 27 is a 2007 American independent film depicting the murder of John Lennon by Mark David Chapman, starring Jared Leto. It was written and directed by J. P. Schaefer. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2007 and the Berlin Film Festival in February. It received generally mixed reviews, although it did receive positive notices in Salon, The Hollywood Reporter, and Entertainment Weekly.

The film initially failed to land a U.S. distributor. The film was leaked onto the internet on March 23, 2007. The film saw US theatrical release in March 2008 and won the Debut Feature Prize award for Schaefer at the Zurich Film Festival. The film was finally released on March 28, 2008 according to Entertainment Weekly's 2008 Spring film preview for Chapter 27.

The similar film The Killing of John Lennon was released the previous year, produced in the United Kingdom, and dealt more extensively with Chapman's life prior to the shooting than did Chapter 27.

Odd film. Brings to mind "Taxi Driver" without the intensity of that film. Instead, writer-director J.P. Schaefer goes for an artsy feel with monotone, constant voiceover by Mark David Chapman (an unrecognizable Jared Leto) about everything under the sun but never exactly why he decided he had to kill Lennon. It's to Leto's credit that the character becomes compulsively watchable in spite of a fairly one-dimensional treatment via Schaefer's screenplay. Lohan seems out of place and uncomfortable throughout but Leto is quite good. He put on 67 pounds for the role and shows it multiple times in all its glory. The actor is obviously dedicated and gives a performance that singlehandedly makes the film a slight recommendation for those interested in this sort of thing.

Grade: C+
