Re: Planet B-Boy
The film studio I'm interning for this semester gave me a screener copy of this to watch, since it's one of their big upcoming theatrical releases (slated for a March bow in semi-wide release). I found it highly enjoyable and compelling, and this is coming from someone who generally isn't a fan of documentaries. It successfully balances the more dramatic moments with some light comedic humor, and the dance sequences present on film are fantastic. I'd definitely recommend it and hope you guys check it out when it is released later this year. B+

Re: Planet B-Boy
Entertaining enough, but overall, flawed. It works best when using the dance to show unification among us as cultures, and works least when trying to amp up the backstories, I wasn't really interested in the "my father doesn't believe in me" spiels.
The Battle of the Year sequences suffer from overrediting, I would've rather just seen the performances like the audience or judges did, rather than having it so chopped and mixed up that I had no way to judge which was more impressive than the other. On that note, I also wish they went more into the judging process, and exactly what makes one team better than the other. I thought France was the best and they ended up in 4th... whatever.
I have great respect for breakdancing and hope the world championships get more press and audience from this movie, but as a whole, it doesn't surpass watchable and decent.
3/5

6/10 -> C
It never tries to become anything more than the basic documentary. There isn't any emotional investment here, the few "touching" stories they chose to do felt like they have been added for the sake of having something more than just the dancing sequences.
It's not boring, but it's completely mediocre.
