 In & Out
In & Out Quote: In & Out is a 1997 American romantic comedy film directed by Frank Oz and starring Kevin Kline, Joan Cusack, Matt Dillon, Tom Selleck, Debbie Reynolds, Bob Newhart, and Wilford Brimley. The screenplay was written by screenwriter Paul Rudnick. Joan Cusack was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance.
The film was inspired by Tom Hanks's tearful speech when he accepted his 1994 Oscar (for his role in Philadelphia), in which he mentioned his high-school drama coach Rawley Farnsworth, and his former classmate John Gilkerson, "two of the finest gay Americans, two wonderful men that I had the good fortune to be associated with". The film became one of mainstream Hollywood's few attempts at a comedic "gay movie" of its era, and was widely noted at the time for a 10-second kiss between Kevin Kline and Tom Selleck.

Hysterically funny. Kevin Kline is a delight, and Joan Cusack justifiably got an Oscar nomination for her role as the confused fiancee. One of the few mainstream pictures to successfully portray homosexuality without complete stereotypes. A-

grade a comedy.

 Re: In & Out
How did audiences react to this when it first came out? (Haha, I made a funny) With the outrage I've seen directed at I Love You Phillip Morris I can't help but think back in 1997 (I believe that's when it was released) this movie may have pissed some mainstream moviegoers off. If I remember correctly the ads didn't show that Kline's character was actually gay. I rented it right away when it was released on video and I remember my parents thought it was sick . I didn't know he was actually gay or I wouldn't have even watched it with them knowing they were anti-gay. Does anyone here remember what audiences actually thought? I don't remember much from then. Didn't even realize this was Oscar nominated. It certainly did great at the Box Office, opening to over 15 Million in under 2,000 theaters. Legs were great too. One Rotten Tomatoes user says, "If people want to watch these kinds of films in the privacy of their own homes then fine, I just don't want this kind of rubbish on my TV and shoved in my face!" Or here's a quote from a Netflix user: "From the womans point of view, this is not at all interesting. There is nothing positive for the woman, and there is nothing positive for the male. Its ridiculous. I suppose only if you are gay could this movie have even a modicum of interest for you."And a couple more: " I didn't know what that movie was going to be about when I rented. Thought it was going to be funny (and it was), but I did not expect it to be a plug for being gay. I hope I never get comfortable seeing two guys kiss. As hard as I tried to enjoy this movie, I could not accept the outcome." " I really expected more from this after reading the reviews. I didn't think this was very funny at all and there was much more gay in this then I though there would be. I would not recommend this movie." I hate when there's more gay in a movie than I thought there would be . Anyway, I watched it again in like 2003 and remember finding it really funny. Not sure what I'd give it. Probably an A-.

 Re: In & Out
Definitely an A from me. I really can't remember when I first saw the movie. I would've been... 12 when the movie came out, and I definitely wouldn't have been allowed to see it, at least, not if my dad knew about it (my mom was far more open about what my sister & I were allowed to see/hear as kids; I think I first saw The Big Chill when I was 7 or 8).
It was probably after the video came out on VHS. My mom owns it, so... gosh, I'm gonna guess it was probably 2000 or so when I would have seen it. Which makes sense, because it was around that time that I started 9th grade in public school and began to meet all the theater kids.... ;-)
I have always loved this movie, and I really need to get a copy for myself, 'cause I want to show my friends. Makes me feel old to think that one of my friends who'd love the movie would've only been *6* when it came out... I guess there's a reason I've been given the nickname "Mama Joy" in our group. hehehe

 Re: In & Out
Too earnest, not funny enough - - a big disappointment for this Kevin Kline fan.
