 The Arsenal Stadium Mystery
The Arsenal Stadium Mystery Quote: The Arsenal Stadium Mystery is a 1939 British mystery film, and is one of the first feature films where football is a central element in the plot.
The film is a murder mystery set, as the title suggests, at the Arsenal Stadium, Highbury, London, then the home of Arsenal Football Club, who were at the time the dominant team in English football. The backdrop is a friendly match between Arsenal and The Trojans, a fictitious amateur side; one of the Trojans' players drops dead during the match, and when it is revealed he has been poisoned, suspicion falls on his teammates as well as his former mistress. Detective Inspector Slade (Leslie Banks) is called in to solve the crime.
The film stars several Arsenal players and staff (such as Cliff Bastin and Eddie Hapgood), although only manager George Allison has a speaking part. The Trojans' body doubles on the pitch were players from Brentford, who wore a special striped kit for the occasion, during the First Division fixture between the two sides on 6 May 1939; this was the last match of the 1938–39 season and Arsenal's last official league fixture before the outbreak of the Second World War.
The film was directed by Thorold Dickinson, and shot at Denham Film Studios and on location at Arsenal Stadium. It was written by Dickinson, Donald Bull and Alan Hyman, adapted from a novel by Leonard Gribble.
Dickinson planned a follow-up, The Denham Studio Mystery, which was intended to incorporate footage from the abortive film of I Claudius, but this fell through.

A fascinating little curio of British cinema and definetly one of the oldest films i've ever watched all the way through (I saw half of Metropolis once but fell asleep since it was pretty late) it's quaint, predictable and fluffy but also pretty damn enjoyable.
The fact that the film revolves around a murder at Highbury football stadium the old home of my favourite football team Arsenal made me seek it out and not even the threat of clipped Queens English deterred me.
Its an amusing trot thru of stereotypes.
All the characters are insanely polite, even the eventual murderer is so nice you'd let him date your daughter
The fact that the crowd banters with the referee during the football sequences is hilarious. They should update/remake this so that during the banter scene a Rome policeman comes up to the supporters and beats the crap out of them for "causing trouble" (warning only football followers will get what i mean by that)
The managed to rope a few of the actual Arsenal players of the time into the movie as well. I can say confidently they do a better acting job then David Beckham could ever manage.
The actual "mystery" itself isn't much to write home about, its like a bad CSI murder to be honest.
The best part of the movie is the humour, I was amazed how silly and funny it was, it definetly plays the light hearted card extremely well.
I was quite pleased overall, it ended up being a pleasant way to past the time and I'd watch it again if its a lazy Sunday afternoon.
