Saw this earlier today. Wasn't too bad... a decent little thriller, nothing more or less. Could have used more of the crocodile though.

I'm not sure if I can give this a grade yet, but I will say that the environment I saw it in made it one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in a long time. They use more of a Jaws approach with the croc, but the scenes it does have are pretty awesome and very gory (think bodies torn into shreds on screen, my favorite part is when we see the croc snap down on someone and cause their head to explode), depending on if you can view it like some late night Spike TV flick. It could have used a bit less Hotel Rwanda bullshit though. I was cracking up when Dominic Purcell gave his stupid speech about how they created the monster, erhm, figuratively speaking. Oh yeah, and the Orlando Jones crocodile chase was so ridiculously goofy that it transcended into another level of awesome.

PRIMEVAL Can't decide on whether it wants to be a monster movie involving capturing and or killing a 30 foot long Crocodile responsible for over 300 lives or HOTEL RWANDA with all the subplot politics involved.. It's like a combination of GHOST IN THE DARKNESS, JAWS and HOTEL RWANDA in one.... Orlando Jordan is the wise cracking cameraman tagging along spouting lines about how much he hates Africa and befriends some native kid he names "Joe Joe" and at 1 point, Joe Joe was actually dinner for this big ass Crocodile by getting stuck inside this 30 foot long cage they constructed to capture this thing, then the Crocodile smashes this thing sideways knocking it into the water and submerging it.. The acting and dialogue certainly wasn't anything special and it shouldn't be in a movie like this.. The Croc FX clearly were CGI FX as opposed to the Animatronics used in LAKE PLACID to make that Croc look and feel more real.. There were hit and miss moments with the Crocodile in that one moment, this thing looks incredibly real, especially in the night shots and other times, he looked damn hokey, like the scene where this Crocodile chases Orlando Jordan through a field with no water around, chasing him at full speed and at the end of the day, there's no way something of this size could run that quick on dry land.. I would love to of seen how Jordan died cause the screen faded to white as soon as the Croc caught up to him, then flashes to another scene.. Another scene of hokiness that I probably annoyed the kid next to me by complaining out loud at how hokey it was, was at the end when Dominic Purcell is trying to escape this Croc by driving off in this LAND ROVER, only to have the back wheels stuck in the water, then this 30 foot long Croc smashes into the back of the vehicle nearly taking the entire back end off with the native kid sitting in the backseat injured and he doesn't even get eaten and the Croc manages to knock the vehicle back up on land enabling them to make their escape.. Overall, this movie was seriously a mixed bag with no crowd reaction at the end and I don't think this was near as good as LAKE PLACID or even ANACONDA for that matter and I merely wasted $9.00 Bucks on this.. It had it's moments of Gore and with some good scenes of the Croc crushing this guy in his mouth and blood spraying everywhere, but other than that, this was sort of disappointing and I look to see this on the Sci-Fi Channel for long along with a DVD Release..

Yeah, it's solid entertainment for the most part, but it's like half political issues in Africa and stuff. I didn't really expect that. But it's gory and pretty fun.

So it tries to mix Blood Diamond and Jaws into one film and it pretty much fails on both levels. It's rarely exciting and some of the dialogue is just plain terrible (like the aforementioned speech by Dominic Purcell). Orlando Jones delivers quite a bad and laughable (though not funny) performance in this one, while all the rest never rises above average and generic. The whole African political issues stuff seemed to be in here for no reason. I think they'd have been much better off with a straightforward monster croc film.
Now as for the monster croc parts, the film never works in building tension either. Yeah, the gory deaths are nicely done (though you can obviously see the CGI) and some of the attacks by Gustave are quite intense, but the whole thing is too unrealistic. Yeah, sure, I know I shouldn't be here claiming that a movie like this should be realistic and all, but it annoys me how it claims to be based on "real life"-events and then presents us a crocodile which in no way behaves like any normal crocodile would, who is too fast, too "jumpy" and who kills his victims in a way no usual crocodile would (or could for that matter).
Now I'm realy waiting for Greg McLean's Rogue.

 Re: Primeval
I tries to mix social commentary with animal disaster and fails miserably at both. Also the acting is so very bad in this.
