Black Christmas

Quote:
Black Christmas (2006, abbreviated as Black X-Mas) is a remake of the 1974 Canadian horror slasher film of the same name. It was written and directed by Glen Morgan and stars Katie Cassidy, Michelle Trachtenberg, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Oliver Hudson, Lacey Chabert, Kristen Cloke, Andrea Martin and Crystal Lowe. The score was the last to be composed and conducted by Shirley Walker, who died a month before the film's release. Winstead and Lowe reunited from their appearance in James Wong's Final Destination 3.

In December 2006, upon anticipation of its premiere, the film garnered some criticism from religious groups due to its graphic content in a holiday setting, as well as the distributor's decision to release the film on Christmas Day in the United States. The film opened in the United Kingdom on December 15, 2006, and, despite backlash from some religious organizations, opened in US theaters on Christmas Day 2006.

I'll give it a B.

A by-the-numbers slasher flick with pretty girls doing stupid things and dying one by one, with a festive twist.

Because you cannot complain. It is EXACTLY what you would expect it to be.
And if you come away from the film a hater....then your an arsehole for going to see it in the first place.

Simple. As. That.

Label me an a-hole then, because I thought this was beyond terrible. Obviously I expected poor acting and corny writing, but I did not expect it to be completely free of suspense or logic*. One of the year's worst and most annoying movies! D-.

* ***SPOILERS***

In one scene, they point out there's another home less than 100 feet away from the sorority house. Yet this seemingly disappears during the few scenes set outside and no one even considers running there for help or shelter. C'mon, this is just offensively lazy writing!

Fun horror film. Sure, it's illogical but what film isn't? A nice return to the old-style slasher with excessive but creative gore.

Grade - B+

Plenty aren't. Plenty, even in the horror genre.

If you look closely, I'm sure you can find some inconsistencies in every film.

Ok, first of all, Merry Christmas to all of you.. Second, if anyone has seen the original BLACK CHRISTMAS, were there alot of similarites between the 2 or is this meant to be sort of a standalone movie?? Was the gore really good along with the deaths?? Was their an abundance of nudity and more importantly, Howere the phone calls compared to the original??/

I haven't seen the original ( ), but I've heard about the supposedly terrifying threatening phone calls it has. I can't imagine the ones in this version being anywhere near as good -- here, they almost register as afterthoughts and are very brief.

And there's not too much nudity. A brief shower scene is the only one which might register as 'arousing' to non-perverts.

Wow, to my great surprise after all the rumors of Dimension chopping the movie to bits, I was suprised to find that the movie was extremely enjoyable, one of the most fun slasher films I've seen in years theatrically. I'll trade a few lapses in logic for a movie that has this high of a body count, and such fun deaths to boot. Really liked how there wasn't one established lead, it was a lot harder to call who was going to die and how. That said, the end was a bit much, but all and all I definitely got my money's worth. My second favorite horror movie of the year after The Descent.

So you think this will have good legs or what and is it worth shelling out $$$ to see or wait for the DVD??

I don't know how good it's legs can be considering the studio opened it on a Monday (stupid stupid decision) but yeah I think they'll be better then the two previous horror movies to open on Christmas, and I wouldn't be surprised if you liked it a lot B, just don't compare and contrast it to the original, a wholly different type of horror movie. It's like comparing Alien to Aliens.

Well, it seems the UK and US version have some differences....

Spoilers!!

Michelle Trachenburg's death in the US version is an ice skate to the head.
In the UK, it's a bag over the face, eyes gouged out and dragged down the hall
by her empty eye sockets.

Kyles death is different.

And Billy falls on a christmas tree at the end in the US, but is burned to death in UK.

Wonder why the changes?

What happened to the part in the trailers where Michelle Trachtenberg was holding a shotgun or something and said "Merry Christmas Mother Fucker"? I missed the very beginning (thanks to my fellow movie go-ers, arg!) but I don't think that it was that soon.

Anyway, as far as the movie as a whole, I thought it was perfectly fine. It was fun, somewhat unpredictable (as there wasn't a clear "I am the lead character" person) and just what I expected. I don't understand the reviews that absolutely hated it. It was FAR from the worst slasher I have ever seen. Far. I thought that for the most part all the people acted reasonably considering they didn't even think anything was wrong.

Yeah, so, it was fine. Fun, even. I wish Michelle Trachtenberg would have been the lead, though. Yes.....

It's called seeing all the stuff on DVD that you didn't see in the trailers or the theatrical version, like they did with The DESCENT..

I know that there's always some super extreme unrated cut on DVD, but I was actually kind of looking forward to Michelle's shotgun/mother fucker line. I'll live if I have to wait for some unrated DVD for it.

I never expected these words to be coming out of my mouth, but this is the best horror film of the year.

It's essentially a Tales From The Crypt episode extended by an hour or so, even down to the exaggerated camera angles and play with dramatic lighting. Infact, there are a couple of moments involving flashbacks with font on the screen to tell us the date that look like they were ripped straight out of an EC comic.

The greatest thing about this film is how infectious it's tone is. Not only is it hilarious (this is a pitch black comedy more than anything else, filled with visual gags and tongue-in-cheek humor - it could be viewed as a send-up of slasher films, infact), but it's one of the most audacious and fearless horror films I've seen in years. You are never quite sure what new height of depravity this film is going to hit, and it's enthralling to try and keep up with it.

Couple that with Morgan's bold and dynamic camera, and you've got what has become a criminally overlooked slasher gem.

It'll be interesting to see what cut(s) make it out on DVD. There are definitely some issues with cohesiveness and clarity that could be addressed, but it really didn't have the feel of something that had been cut to ribbons.

I think the main reason the film is being dismissed so quickly by the majority of the horror community is it's nothing like the original in tone or structure.

Yeah. So. Uh. No.

Good? No. Bad? Sorta. It was a true mixed bag of a film. It had some great dark comedy, in fact at one point half the audience burst out into laughter, and not just chuckling either. There were some definate groan inducing moments though. It was very cliched, very stupid, very gorey. But, somehow, it ends up being slightly, just ever so slightly mind you, enjoyable.

Ah, hell with it. It was fun. It was stupid. It was annoying. It was fucking disgusting at some points (the "cookie scene" for example) but it was a fun ride. Not the best, but there are certainly vast quantities of "slasher" films out there that are much, much worse.

It will definately improve with vast quantities of alcohol and a selection of good friends to mock it. That much is certain.

Anyone who calls this the best film of the year when, in the last twelve months, we've had The Hills Have Eyes and The Descent, is a bit cracked.
