Snake Eyes
Snake EyesQuote: Snake Eyes is a conspiracy thriller film directed by Brian De Palma, one featuring his trademark use of long tracking shots and split screens. It starred Nicolas Cage, Gary Sinise and Carla Gugino.
Released in 1998, the film was written by David Koepp and De Palma, and rated R when released to theaters on August 7 of 1998. It cost an estimated $73 million to produce, returned $103 million worldwide and received a mixed response from critics. Solid thriller, but a bit predictable. B

Re: Snake Eyes
An underrated De Palma, I think. Everyone shits on it because it's got Nic Cage overacting and some really show-offy camerawork, but I found it to be a great exploration of surveillance and eyewitnesses and voyeurism. Of course there's Hitchcockian overtones throughout (this is De Palma we're talking about, after all), but I don't think the necessary homages overpowered what the film is trying to do.
Admittedly, the ending kinda goes to shit, but that great final credits shot nearly redeems it. Almost as brilliant as something like Caché's final shot.

Re: Snake Eyes
Cage overacting is mostly why it's so fun.
It's no Dressed to Kill or Scarface, but I enjoy it. The last time De Palma seemed to be even remotely enjoying himself behind the camera.

Re: Snake Eyes
I absolutely HATED Femme Fatale. Watching it was just painful. The same is true of The Black Dahlia and especially the utterly embarrassing Redacted. I'm more or less done with De Palma...

(Overall, I'm a DePalma fan though - - Wikipedia has two feature films listed for DePalma in 2012, Passion & The Key Man - - I hope they come to fruition.) ((Also, check out KJ's review thread of another underrated DePalma film, The Black Dahlia - - notice how some KJer's were confounded by it's excellence.))
