This horror movie starring Maria Bello and Sean Bean steals all elements of its story from different other horror movies. Mostly from horror "classics" like Darkness and Dark Water. Not exactly the casual horror movies other films steal from, but this one does. Bello and Bean play a somewhat estranged couple whose daughter apparently drowns in their plain view. Then, of course, ghosts enter the scene, especially the one of a young girl that drowned 50 years ago in the same place. Things get complicated and the obligatory twist awaits us at the end.
The movie, however, despite being as unoriginal and generic as it gets, manages to be quite entertaining and Bello's great acting certainly elevates it quite a bit (just like Connelly's turn helped Dark Water). The ending is not that predictable, but it is anything but original. Most of the scares don't work as they are being achieved by sound effects and sadly not by atmosphere. All in all, it is an entertaining and somewhat suspenseful horror rip-off.

 Re: The Dark
Just caught this on Sky Movies, and I'm left genuinely perplexed. What the fuck happened at the end? Was the twist that the dead welsh girl had somehow stolen Bello's daughter's body and made it back to the real world again? And if so, what the fuck happened to her daughter?
I realise this is bumping an extremely old thread for a film that (apparently) only Lecter has actually seen. But if anyone (Lecter) can clear this up for me, I'd be grateful.

 Re: The Dark
Hmm, a very average film which makes it hard to remember the detials. But basically, that dead Welsh girl somehow got ahold of Bello's daughter's body and returned to the real world (with some evil Darkness inside her). Bello goes back to Annwyn (sp?) to save her daughter which she can only do by trading herself for her daughter's life. But it seems as if she's tricked in the end by the dead Welsh girl (or by her actual daughter who appears to only want to be with her father). Or whatever...that's my take on it. : )

 Re: The Dark
i didn't make it past the first 30 minutes...this is probably the most unoriginal mystery flick ever, ripping off superior horror films like the us remake of the ring or dont look now (that one really hurt). and the horribly overlit flashback scenes that want to show how the daughter became estranged from her mother are an insult to even the dumbest viewer.

 Re: The Dark
I had rented this when it came out. I don't remember what I'd rate it. Maybe a C? I know I didn't really care for it.
