I think Pathfinder sits much better in September. It would've been another Reign of Fire level dissapointment had it opened in July, although the budget was probably somewhat lower. I mean, it looks REALLY nice from a fx/production standpoint, but the director made the 12 million dollars he had for the Texas Chainsaw remake go faaaarrr on the visuals. Still, violent action films like this have time and time again found sucess in September (Transporter 2, Resident Evil 2, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Underworld, etc)

Yes, September is perfect for this. It can do atleast $40m there and that would classify it as a bonafide hit!

Judd Apatow's follow-up to The 40 Year Old Virgin, a comedy called Knocked Up (starring Katherine Heigl, David Krumholtz and Paul Rudd), will open on August 17, 2007, the identical weekend that Virgin opened last year.
Looks like there's a lot of confidence if they've already set a high-profile release date for it, a year and a half early.

Thats a good slot for Knocked Up - It should do well.
Now where will Rush Hour fit in...Comingsoon.net indicates that filming will start soon for a 2007 release. It doesnt specify Summer but thats most likely. August 10 is probably the best bet. Or probably November.
Also - Will Smith's I am Legend will be released Summer 07 aswell!! Its getting damn crowdes with big films now. Especially with the July 4th weekend seeing 4 big films releases within a few days.

The Number 23 (Jim Carrey) - February 27, 2007
Rush Hour 3 - August 10, 2007
Hairspray - December 21, 2007
Rush Hour 3 is opening on the same weekend as Alien vs. Predator 2. Obviously, New Line doesn't intend to move unless the film gets delayed. Looks like AVP2 will have to move.

I think June will be beefed up with Ratatouillie and one of Transformers or FF4 moving up. Its too crowded over the July 4th weekend.
August looks fantastic - back to the great Augusts of 1999-2003. All we need is an Austin Powers or another American Pie

Yeah, June 22 is a relatively empty spot that should and will be filled with some of the overload. There's The Brave One, which is a Foster/Howard thriller, and Stardust, which is some sort of fantasy with a De Niro supporting role. Both won't open past mid 20s at best. My guess is something from July, or either POTC3 or Shrek 3 if one of them wants to get away from each other.

Yeah June 22 is weak - If POTC3 moves in there - that would free up May for some smaller to medium size films. Also the Oceans 13 weekend isnt all that strong and a good release date as nothing is released the week before.
Somewhere in there we need to add in Will Smith's - I am Legend aswell.

This is summer 07 as it stands now. Ive replaced the dates with Week Numbers...(the films on Weeks 9 and 10 are only 5 days apart). So far there are only 3 empty slots. I think films like Star Dust and The Brave One should counter the big May blockbusters.
1 Spiderman 2
2
3 Shrek the Third
4 Pirates of the Carribean
5
6 Ocean's 13
Surf's Up
7 Used Guys
8 The Brave One
Stardust
9 Evan Almighty
Ratatouillie
10 Transformers
Fantastic Four 2
11 Harry Potter and the Order of the Pheonix
12 I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry
Journey 3D
13 10,000 BC
The Simpsons Movie
14 The Bourne Ultimatum
Underdog
15 Alien Vs Prediter
Rush Hour 3
Nancy Drew
16 Knocked Up
Disturbia
17

New Relase Dates:
The Departed - October 6th, 2006
Zodiac - November 22nd, 2006
The Blood Diamond - January 12th, 2007
The Visiting - January 26th, 2007
Catch and Release - January 26th, 2007
300 - March 16th, 2007
Sunshine - March 16th, 2007
Um, The Blood Diamond stuns me...I was thinking it might get awards attention with the cast of DiCaürio and Connelly and Zwick directing it, but looks like they are flat-out dumping it.
The Departed is released a bit earlier than I thought. Gotta wonder about its Oscar chances now.

Maybe that's the wide release weekend for The Blood Diamond, and it'll open limited a few weeks earlier. That's the only possible solution from where I'm standing. Hmm, Zodiac = Oscar attention? Maybe Fincher will finally get the attention he deserves.
Not surprised about Catch and Release getting released in what's really been the worst weekend quality wise in the past few years.
2006: Big Momma's House 2, Annapolis, Nanny McPhee.
2005: Alone in the Dark, Hide and Seek.
2004: You Got Served, The Perfect Score, The Big Bounce.
I should know, it's the weekend around my birthday. The best I can ever do is to see the Oscar bait that expands into wide release that weekend.
300 has the same release date as the director's last film Dawn of the Dead. March has been kind to violent R rated films with internet appeal like this so I think it'll be very successful. I doubt that it'll keep the same release date as Sunshine, the incredible-sounding Danny Boyle sci-fi/thriller/disaster film in space. Both have the potential for 30 million + weekends if marketed well.

I wonder what wacky innovative song-and-dance he'll do this time to explain why it's not Garner's fault.

They definitely need to move Order of the Phoenix to November. It just doesn't fit in the crowded summer, and will do badly because of that. Same with Ocean's 13. Both of these are holiday movies, and don't belong in the summer.
And Pirates 3 should move to July, possibly taking Order of the Phoenix's spot. At least, that makes the most sense to me.

Eh, he'll just say they dumped it and that it could've made $50M opening weekend if released correctly.

HP just doesn't fit in the summer. Azkaban proved that. To me, Azkaban was by far the best HP movie, but it had the lowest gross, probably because it was released in the summer. It's a holiday movie. November seems like the best time for it. It doesn't matter if the book has just been released (as Goblet proved), the buzz will still be high. And besides, we don't even know when book 7 is going to be released. I think Phoenix should definitely move to November, if only because Summer 2007 is so crowded.
And it doesn't have an impact on when Prince is going to come out. Just because they push Phoenix to November, doesn't mean they can't start shooting Prince 'til then. They could start filming Prince as soon as they're done filming Phoenix to get it out by November 2008. If they're planning on having Phoenix ready for July 2007, then they have a lot of time from when they're done filming it until when they need to have Prince ready. They can just delay Phoenix.
And Pirates 3 needs to come out next year. Next July. Any longer and people will forget, or cease to care. One year seems like the perfect time between films like this (as LOTR proved).

Yeah, but as Goblet proved, it doesn't matter if the book is released the week before or a few months before the movie comes out. HP mania will still be high. And since it's the last book, HP mania will be even higher. If the book comes out in Summer 2007, then it's too much for the movie to come out then too. If the movie comes out in November 2007, then there's time for the book to sink in, for all the fans to read it, and get hyped up for the movie. It makes more sense.
And it's also better for the reasons you mentioned for Pirates 2. If HP6 comes out in Summer 2007, it'll be maybe the fifth highest film that summer. But if it comes out in November 2007, it has a chance to be the number one film of the holidays. It doesn't have any competition then, whereas in the summer, it's got Spidey 3, Shrek 3, and Pirates 3 to worry about. It just makes more sense to move it to the winter.

Harry Potter 3 was far more hurt by Shrek 2, which made 38 million in HP3's opening weekend, then it was by the summer. It's true that it doesn't have the benefit of Thanksgiving second weekend, but summer weekdays in July would easily make up for that.

C&R will be good for Valentine's Day, considering adults don't rush out to see films on the first weekend.

Though Shrek 3 is coming out next summer, too, so that doesn't help Phoenix. And the summer weekdays didn't do much for Azkaban. I think Phoenix has much more competition than Azkaban did. If it stays in the summer, it will not clear $230 million. Mark my words.
