Groundhog Day

Quote:
Groundhog Day is a 1993 American comedy film directed by Harold Ramis, starring Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. It was written by Ramis and Danny Rubin, based on a story by Rubin.

Murray plays Phil Connors, an egocentric Pittsburgh TV weatherman who, during a hated assignment covering the annual Groundhog Day event in Punxsutawney, finds himself repeating the same day over and over again. After indulging in hedonism and numerous suicide attempts, he begins to re-examine his life and priorities.

In 2006, the film was added to the United States National Film Registry as being deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."

Damn funny. Bill Murray is very good in this. It gets a little weepy near the end, but all and all its one of the more enjoyable flicks.

Awesome Bill Murray comedy, directed by the great Harold Ramis. It falls shy of being as good Stripes, Caddyshack and Ghostbusters, which is a testament of how many great comedies Murray has been in. What About Bob? and Meatballs are also great!

This is about as classic as you can get for comedy. Ramis and Murray are awesome together.

I wouldn't say that it deserves a status classic from my point of view, but to deny that it has become a modern classic would be foolish of me. Personally, I thought this was an overly enjoyable feature with Bill Murray at his all-time best. The movie has a very original (by that time) concept and the execution is pretty good, mostly thanks to Murray's superb performance.

This movie is probably the oldest movie I have actually seen in theatres. I saw it at a special screening back in 1999 and since then my opinion of it actually improved as I think that this movie works really well on repeat viewings and doesn't lose its wit and humor. Andie McDowell is also surprisingly good, but I still wish they went with a stroner female lead. The movie is not as laugh-out-loud funny as some suggest, but it is amusing throughout and has lots of heartwarming and moving moments as well, especially towards the end. Bill Murray really managed the change of his character very well.

Very enjoyable comedy that's hilarious at times and thought-provoking at others. Perhaps a bit too sentimental at the end, but the beginning is brilliant. Murray is fantastic.

I agree with Trixter about its ending, but everything else works brilliantly. An impressive (though a little sugary) metaphor of life.
B+ or 8.5/10

Wow, um, I haven't seen this movie in many years.

There's no way I can remember enough to review it. However, I do remember enjoying it for what it was. I also remember another thing: my mother despised this film. :shades:

I don't know if I'd be reviewing anytime soon, but I do remember "not hating it" back when it came out.

Ancient Grade: B (very unbalanced because I'd have no idea what I'd grade it now)

My favorite comedy. I can't write much more than that since I haven't seen the film in a couple of years, but it's on my Top 10 list. It's hilarious, sentimental and very clever.

A+

It's a shame though that this is the last Ramis/Murray collaboration to date. I hope one day they can put their differences aside, caused by this film, and make another movie together. From Caddyshack to Stripes and Ghostbusters to this, they're absolutely perfect together.

I already stated it. That movie can rot in hell for all I care. You along with it!

Post Re: Groundhog Day
It's an ingenious concept with a great set-up, and the first few 'days' are pretty hilarious, but it soon gets caught in a rut, and can't seen to decide how to end. As a result, it alternates between morbid, dark humour and some syrupy sweet sentimental stuff, two extremes that don't mesh well. Murray is terrific though, and it's pretty funny all the way through. Oh, and Andie MacDowell is not a suitable romantic lead, or, indeed, a good actress at all.

In my top ten favorite movies of all time, one of my final exam papers was on this film. It's a truly ingenious concept of not only being hysterical and heartwarming, but it's narrative is brilliant. Even though some of the days are different, for the most part, they change very little and are extremely repetative, much like how real life is. Bill Murray's best performance to date (Maybe not his funniest, but its close)

A+
