The History Boys is a 2006 British comedy-drama film adapted by Alan Bennett from his play of the same name, which won the 2005 Olivier Award for Best New Play and the 2006 Tony Award for Best Play. It was directed by Nicholas Hytner, who directed the original production at the Royal National Theatre in London, and features the original cast of the play.

The school scenes were filmed in Watford in the two grammar schools, Watford Grammar School for Boys and Watford Grammar School for Girls. The film uses the uniform of Watford Boys. Locations in Elland and Halifax, West Yorkshire are used to create the broader landscape of Sheffield in which the story is set.

One of last year's worst. I couldn't stand any of the characters and the film itself was both dull and disturbing.

THE HISTORY BOYS (2006)

I wasn't sure what to expect from "The History Boys," but I know I never expected it to be as good as it ended up being. And it's funny because while watching it I would wonder why I thought it was so fascinating and engrossing. I mean, I'm not even close to a history buff and a lot of the discussions in the film didn't enthrall me, yet here I was loving every minute of it. It's a smart, very well-written comedy/drama with wonderful performances that I couldn't get enough of. I was dreading it ending and when it did I wanted more.

The whole cast (made up of the actors from the play) does a great job, but the performance that stood out the most for me was Stephen Campbell Moore (Bright Young Things, A Good Woman) as Irwin. He was amazingly charismatic, which made it all the more believable why the character of Dakin (Dominic Cooper) would be so captivated by him. He was almost like a magnetic force, making it nearly impossible for me to see how anyone could not succumb to his charm. I remember him leaving an impression on me in the film "Bright Young Things," but I sort of forgot about him. My interest in him certainly went up with this film. I hope he does many more films in the future. I loved the scene with his character and the character of Dakin towards the end of the film. It was incredibly sexually-charged and quite successful at it. On another note, I also really liked Jamie Parker as Scripps and Frances de la Tour (Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire) as Mrs. Lintott.

"The History Boys" is one of the year's best, most surprising movies. It's not for everyone, but intellectuals should appreciate it. It deserved some Academy Award nominations, at least for "Adapted Screenplay." I can't stop thinking about it, and with such a gloomy ending (movies that go into what the future holds for its characters usually do end up a bit depressing) it will be harder to disregard. Even if it didn't end on a bit of a sad note it still would have been a very memorable movie, but depressing ones seem to make more of an impact. This is one of the best private school dramas about teacher/student relationships that I've seen, and it has a more intimate feel than the others. It surely helps that the cast has been doing the play together for so long. It gave them a more natural, genuine chemistry. The characters of the students really felt like friends, and the movie had a nice, smooth flow to it.

I can't wait to add this one to my collection and I hope many more will discover it on DVD.

Grade: 8/10 (A-)

Disturbing is usually a good thing, no?

Regarding the ending, the original play's ending is actually much depressing/darker - in regards with Posner's character.

Well I'd love to see that ending. It would be so cool to have been able to see the play :(.
