Loyal and bABA are totally going to hate it. It's 90% flashback!
And yeah, I really love Desmond right now. He's angsty, but he has creepy old ladies to disrupt it and stuff.

AMAZING episode. Desmond has been my favorite character since last year's stupendous season finale and, once again, his flashback was undeniably gripping (especially with all of the Swan Station-related touches). My jaw dropped open several times. It was so trippy and captivating that I think it requires a second viewing- it was a great departure from the usual episode. Loved the last prediction of Charlie's death as well- you're going to die, hobbit! Seriously, I love the actor (he's very funny on the talk show circuit as well, but the character has just become too damn annoying. I welcome his death and I think I'll probably happen next season or in this year's season finale. This season has suddenly become very good, after this episode and last week's, and let's hope it stays this way, folks. *Crosses fingers*
Next week looks great as well- with learning what happened to the abducted kids and the missing Cindy, when she mysteriously vanished last season when the whispers happened. When are they going to explain that? LOL

So does this mean Claire is going to die too? If with the universe Charlie is supposed to die, then Claire in her tent and Claire drowning in the water was supposed to too. Otherwise that plotline makes no sense.
I love Claire, but it wouldn't surprise me. They've underused and neglected her character so much that she's pretty much dispensable, as much as I hate to say it. She doesn't do anything anymore.
Oh, and I loved the episode. Lost is truly back.

No Claire would have been OK, Charlie was electrocuted.
BUT how did Desmond even know this was going to happen?? he didn't get transported to the future!! How did he know about Locke's speech and Charlie's demise?

I really liked Not in Portland.
But Flashes Before Your Eyes was pure brilliance.
This fits in nicely with the idea of the Numbers, introduced through the game over the summer... that the numbers dictate the "fate" of humanity and one of the reason why Dharma is on the island may be in order to study ways of changing fate.
I liked parts of the first 6 episodes last year, but I think this is the best episode since the Season 2 finale.

Another wacky thought...
What if the flashbacks are not just flashbacks for the folks on the island, but like Desmond, some kind of weird chance to change the way things played out in specific moments of their lives.
Maybe when they figure this out, they'll get off the island.
Maybe not, just a thought.

You could be onto something there, maybe
I do think fate, or maybe the ability/desire to change mistakes in earlier lives, is probably the biggest factor in the mystery of the island. Because, obviously, no one on that island really has a clean, totally normal slate from their life.

seems like the writers watched butterfly effect, followed by the matrix trilogy, then watched the first two final destination films. lots of similarities . . .

heres my problem with lost (once again)
see how desmond is turning out to be great? now lets go over the entire series and lets see what all of us keep saying
I love Jack. hes my favorite character
I love Sawyer. Hes my favorite character
Locke is the man!!
Sayid is the only sane character. Hes clearly the best
Mr. Echo is great. Hes easily the best character on the show
I love Desmond
The show continues to make you push and find someone else you like more because the others over time start to suck too very much. when they exhaust desmond, people will need to find another .. again.

I don't think they can exhaust Desmond. I also don't think they will show him enough to exhaust him.

I think the whole Desmond/Penny thing starting from the season 2 finale was the best thing Lost has done. I'm really hoping the endgame somehow revolves around them both. I wouldn't mind that... as long as they keep developing the story as well as they have so far.

Well, for that to work, it'll have to double up some weeks, start earlier than January, or go later than May. 24 goes right from January to May and has to have four shows the first week, two shows in a later week, and two shows the last week. Don't know if that could work for Lost, since it's not as serialized as 24 is.

Tonight's episode was pretty lame, I thought. Definitely a huge step down from last week. Not a whole lot happened, and the flashback - other than to tell us what Jack's tattoos say - was utterly useless. Plus the end was terribly melodramatic. Kate and Sawyer were wasted, too.
