Despite the love this film's receiving, I still can't help but fear AMPAS will continue their trend of looking down their noses at sci-fi movies.

In all honesty, I can't see it winning. I can certainly see a nomination, but a bonafide win's completely out of the question unless Universal pulls their campaigning hand out of their arse. I'm holding out hope for a late-in-the-game lovefest, akin to what happened with Million Dollar Baby, but, failing that, I think it's destined to follow the course of countless others before it.

Children of Men's the kind of film that will have ardent supporters upon release, the odd (ill-judged) critic, and a bountiful future of hindsight reverence.

Not really...

Eternal Sunshine, as much as I feel it was worth a BP nom, was released far too early and was far too small and intimate to be a real contender.

Children Of Men, on the other hand, is being released right in the thick of the Oscar contention period, and is less of a sci-fi flick than it is a Saving Private Ryan (I hate that analogy, 'cos Saving Private Ryan was arse) style full-out war flick.

Also, as much as I love Eternal Sunshine, Children Of Men is such a sterling achievement, I just can't see the academy ignoring it.

Another great review from efilmcritic.
http://www.efilmcritic.com/review.php?movie=15254

Quote:
Based on the novel of the same name by PD James, Children of Men is the third film by the talented and versatile Alfonso Cuarón (Y tu mamá también & Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban). It is a gritty sci fi thriller set only 20 years or so in the future, a time where women have become infertile and the human race is facing extinction in around 60 years – as one piece of graffiti in the film puts it ‘The future is a thing of the past’.

Clive Owen plays Theo, a disillusioned London based office worker whose depression after a failed marriage and death of their only son fits in with an equally disenchanted city where news has just broken that the youngest person in the world (18 years old) has just died. Theo’s wife Julian (Julianne Moore), who heads an alleged terrorist organization, pays him an unexpected visit to ask for his assistance with obtaining transit papers for an illegal refugee named Kee (Claire-Hope Ashitey) who her group needs to escort to safety. Initially he is not interested but when 5000 pounds is offered he soon comes around to the idea.

Theo manages to obtain papers through a family contact but they come with the condition that he needs to be the refugee’s escort. Soon after Theo is thrown into a dangerous plot that involves escorting Kee to the coast to put her in the care of a mysterious organization called the Human Project. Kee is a young female refugee of African descent who may well hold the key to the survival of the human race. She is very precious cargo that many people, including the government, would be very keen to get their hands on.

We learn from a news report early in the film that Britain is the last remaining civilization that has not been thrown into chaos, but it sure is a long way from being a utopia. Instead it is more like a military state where refuges are rounded up like animals and held in detention centres that are like a cross between Nazi Germany and what we have seen in recent years from Abu Ghraib. It is for this reason that transporting a refugee across the country is an incredibly risky affair that could result in harsh penalties.

One of the many factors that make Children of Men a great film is the fact that Cuarón has not gone over the top with the technology aspect as many futuristic films have a tendency to do. This, combined with a chillingly realistic vision as to where current politics might take us, makes the world within Children of Men seem plausible and scarily, a world very much within reach. The movie is shot in a washed out monotone that suits both the gritty landscape and the depressed mood of its inhabitants.

It is also a well paced film that balances the drama and action very successfully. It even remembers to throw in a bit of comedy here and there so that the gloom of the subject matter does not weigh down too heavily on the audiences shoulders. These comic touches mainly come from Michael Caine’s marijuana harvesting hippie who lives ‘off the grid’ in a secret woodland hideout and considers Aphex Twin to be Zen music. Clive Owen is excellent in Children of Men as he transforms from a depressed soul to a passionate man with a purpose, as is the rest of the cast with notable performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor and Claire-Hope Ashitey

Children of Men is a powerful and provocative piece of filmmaking where Cuarón remains faithful to the source but also raises questions about the current political climate and the effect is quite haunting. This is an action film with brains and a sci fi with its feet planted somewhere very close to reality.

I like it. Once again the films incredible atmostphere is pointed out.

I see Children of Men being this year's A History of Violence: Really well-liked by critics and film buffs, generally ignored by the Academy.

I just watched it.

It's a really great movie (though it's a good twenty minutes too short, like Poland, it did feel like some elements were touched upon too briefly), but is it Oscar-y? Eh. I don't know.

The original cut apparently ran to over three hours. Which I'd be very interested to see. Still, I personally couldn't see any room for improvement.

Anyway, Loyal, now you've chimed in with your opinion, how do you feel about its Oscar chances?

I definitely drool at the idea of a much longer version. It REALLY needs to pick up steam to be nominated, though.

The Academy does love Caine, but they also are into newcomers when it comes to Best Supporting Actress. Maybe the girl who played Key will be nominated.

I gave Claire-Hope Ashitey some thought. But I think an acting nom lies squarely on Caine's shoulders. My reasoning:

Every scene he's in, he steals
He's a vet
The AMPAS loves him. 6 noms/2 wins.
And his role as hippie philospher/hash entrepreneur Jasper Palmer is completely against type.

I'd definetly agree with that.

It just hasnt been marketed good at all. Nobody knew it was coming out or even heard of it. I had to drag friends to see it. And then they didnt like it as much as me. It just doesnt appeal to everyone unfortunately.

Kris Tapley is now predicting Alfonso Cuaron for Best Director, but he doesn't have it in his Top 10 for Picture. Still, I think that at least warrants an Honorary Member position.

I don't see why everyone is shooting it down, Munich got a nomination last year. Granted, it was a somewhat weaker year, but this could have a lot of things going for it that Munich won't. Wider appeal, almost certainly better WOM, more appealing cast, and I bet better reviews too.

But this isn't a controversial, prestigious Steven Spielberg film.

Munich wasn't especially controversial, and it certainly wasn't very prestigious (keep in mind I thought it was the best movie of the year.) Yeah obviously it doesn't have Steven Spielberg, but like I said it has things going for it that Munich didn't, like at least some appeal to people under 30.

Munich had a lot of pre-release Oscar buzz. This will have to gain momentum. I'm very unsure of it being nominated, but I don't rule it out (it definitely deserves it).
