horrible horrible dreck. luckily i didn't pay for it. i would suggest that you stay away from this movie unless you are neasus and need to find the right thing to make you want to throw up. wish Russell was here right now so I could throw a phone at him, at least, I have my copy of LA Confidential ready to go.

I saw this about a month ago, and i can only echo what jd.grill said... thank god i didn't pay to see it! Honestly, what is Ridley Scott doing with such a bland story? Nothing actually happens in what feels like a 3 hour film of predictable pseudo romantic dross. Russell Crowe is entirely mis-cast as a romantic lead, and the film has the most innapropriate (and un-funny) use of slapstick i have ever witnessed.

The only positives to pull out of this mess are the flashback scenes with Albert Finney and Freddy Highmore who pour a little emotion and class into their performances. Unfortunately they aren't given nearly enough screen time, these few scenes are by far the most interesting and it would have been better to focus on that side of the story rather than Russell Crowe's. Also the film looks good, really good. But then you'd be hard pressed to point a camera anywhere in Provence and not make it look good.

Interestingly after my screening the studio gave us all a questionnaire to complete, in which we were asked how A Good Year compared to Sideways. That was simple to complete, it doesn't.

i am wondering if this movie should have been re-told as Albert Finney's life story, ala the Notebook, maybe with Russell Crowe or someone else in the flashbacks. anyway, at least the scenery and the pretty girls were nice to look at.

The most enjoyable movie I've seen all year. Russel Crowe was great in the lead, you just saw how much fun he (and the entire cast) had while shooting this film. The more I think about the movie the more I like it. Oh and Marion Cotillard is a really beautiful woman. A-

Meh. It was alright. The cinematography was beautiful and I was never bored, but the slapstick portions were incredibly awful and out of place and there were many moments that were incredibly cheesy and unbelievable.

A low 7/10 (B-)...

It was a decent watch, but seriously I expected so much more from a Riday Scott/Russell Crowe collaboration than this terribly clichéd, casual, run-of-the-mill average flick! This was outright offensively disappointing. Crowe played well with his charms, but seriously, I never got the idea what his character went through some kind of a transformation during the film... The movie is just so...so...UNREMARKABLE whatsoever!

A GOOD YEAR - 7/10 ( B )

I will admit that it's lacking in plot, but the scenery and cinematography is so gorgeous and to-die-for that it really didn't matter much to me. This was definitely better than I was expecting. I really liked Abbie Cornish (Somersault) in it too.
