Saw Little Miss Sunshine. It is a nice, wonderful movie and all, but it won't get any major noms. I think screenplay and maybe Carell is the best it can hope for

Since it opened today, a flurry of positive reviews just came in for The Last King of Scotland, and no negative ones except for the early three. The average rating is up to 7.4, and COTC is up to 7.0. Everyone praises Whitaker and seems to have some minor issues here or there with the film overall.

Updated.

Definitely the surge that Last King of Scotland needed. It could still use some more. It has yet to receive a 100 at metacritic. It did get 3 new reviews that took it back up to 77, though.

Breaking and Entering, Little Children, and Marie Antoinette each received 1 new positive review.

David Denby's review (New Yorker) has been changed to a positive, so now it's 94% for Scotland, and the averages moved up accordingly, almost comparable to Little Miss Sunshine now. This is still in the race, depending on the box office.

Mexico puts 'Labyrinth' on path to Oscar

By John Hecht

MEXICO CITY -- Guillermo del Toro's dark fantasy "Pan's Labyrinth" has been selected as Mexico's foreign-language submission for the 79th Annual Academy Awards, giving the film industry here a strong Oscar contender.

Written, directed and produced by del Toro, "Pan's Labyrinth" will hit U.S. theaters Dec. 29. Tequila Gang, del Toro's Mexican production company, co-produced the picture with Spain's Estudios Picasso.

Additionally, the Mexican Film Academy of Arts and Sciences has selected documentary "En el Hoyo" (In the Pit) as its foreign film entry for the 21st edition of Spain's Goya Awards.

Directed and filmed by Juan Carlos Rulfo, "Hoyo" has won prizes on the festival circuit, including best international documentary at January's Sundance Film Festival.

Should "Pan's Labyrinth" get an Oscar nomination, it will become the third Mexican film in six years to land one of the slots in the foreign-language category.

Recent nominees from Mexico include Carlos Carrera's "El Crimen del Padre Amaro" (The Crime of Father Amaro) in 2003 and Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Amores Perros" (Love's a Bitch) in 2001.

What the heck? How does a review get it THAT wrong on the grade the first time? It's almost like the inner circle of critics contacted him and told him to chage his rating so they could give this the push it needs. I can't say I remember ever seeing an Oscar contender dramatically change it's rating like that after a critic changes his mind..

And for the record, The Last Kind of Scotland has ten times more appeal then The Queen. Just look at the lead performances, which are pretty good indications of how the films appear to be. Whitaker is fiery and bombastic, Mirren is quiet and thoughtful (and very British). I can't possibly see The Queen getting a BP nom over The Last King of Scotland, especially when the latter at least triples the gross of The Queen.

Yup, it's as close to a lock as you can get at this point, thanks to Spain not selecting Volver as it's foreign language film entry, but I dont think it's official yet that Volver wont be Spains entry, will have to wait and see.

Well, I don't want to mess up the main chart with it, but I'll do with it what I did with King Kong and put it in a seperate table. I'll also put Casino Royale in that chart.

Post Re: The Contenders II
I have to say, this year is starting off sooooooo much more encouraging than last year did.

United 93 and Little Miss Sunshine did very well for early contenders. United 93's 19 100's and over 8 rating give others something to shoot for. It set the bar high.

Babel, Bobby, Breaking and Entering, The Departed, The Last King of Scotland, The Queen, Volver, Little Children, and Marie Antoinette are off to strong starts. Films like Catch a Fire and A Good Year are doing decent with their first few reviews. Hollywoodland and World Trade Center did pretty decent. Only Infamous and The Fountain really stumbled out of the gate. Of course, All the King's Men, as expected, was delayed and dumped because it sucked. The Good German and the Good Shepherd are still on the horizon.

Good things have been said about Flags of Our Fathers (as well as it's companion piece), Dreamgirls, and Apocalypto. This would be on amazing season to be remembered if everything stayed it's course!

WOW thats terrible for Fountain. Hopefully it can perk up a bit into a Ripe tomato.

Scotland, Sunshine and Volver are all very high which is great.

Pirates would have been bounced off already. No rotten scores are allowed on the chart after a certain number of reviews.

I disagree with that. The Queen, by all account, is actually a crowd pleaser, and Scotland shouldn't gross more than Capote, certainly not The Constant Gardener. Two should be close instead of a 1:3 ratio at the box office. And with the makeup of academy voters (a lot of older females), I'd argue The Queen appeals more to them than the violent Scotland does. Stephen Frears is a lot more established than Kevin Macdonald. The Queen also has a better chance at a screenplay nom, and it could contend for Makeup. It also has a BFCA nom locked up, unlike Scotland. Overall, with the reviews being close, I think The Queen has the slight upper hand, although both are not in my top 5 at the moment.

It has the win locked up (unless some huge upset happens, like the year when Amelie didn't win...)

It could get nominated for Foreign Picture/Director/Actress/Original Screenplay.

I´d give it a manrginal shot at supporting actress and soundtrack. However, I am not sold on any of those noms - It is a foreign non-epic film, after all. It would need for many US candidates to fade away completely and its box office to be a bit better than typical Almodovar in the US.
