Infamous is getting a much better response than I expected, it seems to be fairly split on whether it's above Capote or not. Still won't be a player though, unfortunatley.
It might be just me, but I think Mirren and Cruz have a lot more buzz than Winslet right now. For the first 2 people are going nuts over praising it, for Kate it's "another shoo-in nomination," it seems like she's great but far from a revelation. Kate being due gives her a boost, but I think things are going to be very tight between the 3. I'm very happy with any one of them, so it's a win-win situation.

I agree with the above post.
If it's 3 way race to the finish with Penelpoe, Helen, and Kate... that would be awesome.
I love Kate Winslet. I adore her.
I think Helen Mirren is an amazing actress.
And yet, I may find myself rooting for Penelope. Don't know yet because I haven't seen any of the films, but one thing's for sure: the best actress race is gonna be awesome this year!

The Departed is shaping up to become more and more a contender. Its reviews certainly don't sound worse than GONY's as of now. Acting noms will be in store. I expect two and it'll do well with technicals as well.

Good review from Emmanuel Levy for The Departed - this is picking up steam big time!
http://emanuellevy.com/article.php?articleID=3371
Quote: This season, perhaps even more impressively, DiCaprio holds his own in "The Departed," Scorsese's best film since "GoodFellas," against such heavyweights as Jack Nicholson, Matt Damon, and Martin Sheen. With justice and luck, "The Departed" should garner DiCaprio (and Scorsese) Oscar nominations.

Scorcese, O'Toole, Mirren....oh man, what a dream winner lineup THAT would be. So many wrongs righted.
Not that it'll happen. But I can dream.

It'll be heaven if the winners are Scorcese, O'Toole, Mirren or Winslet, Pitt, and Bening (suppose the last two go supporting as expected).

All the King's Men is officially the first casualty on the Contenders list. I don't think it's too big of a shock after it was delayed for a year, but it's still disappointing.

Mav, maybe we could add another column for BFCA scores. It's a sort of critic average as well.
Volver has 91, the third highest so far this year behind United 93 (95) and Little Miss Sunshine (94).

Oh snaps, now Babel is getting bad buzz.
Quote: A publicist I spoke to during a lunch earlier this afternoon told me that 80% of the "people" (journalists, I presume) she's spoken to about Alejandro Gonzalez Innaritu's Babel have been iffy about it -- too long, too much like the previous Innaritu films, etc. But there's no basis for anyone to "meh" this film, I argued. It's too well crafted, too full of feeling and echoes about parenting and children. Later I talked with an industry guy who's spoken at length with Samuel L. Jackson, who saw Babel as a judge at the Cannes Film Festival, and the guy said Jackson felt that Babel is "Crash Benetton" -- i.e., a European version of Paul Haggis's Best Picture winner. Dammit...that's a ridiculous point of view. Babel may be in the same solar system as Crash, but it's certainly not on the same planet. What the hell's going on there?

I really, really hope this doens't get a nomination. It's not so much that I'm sick of these "everything is connected" ensemble dramas (although I really, really am). I just LOATHE these movies that try and make endless tragedies and hardship seem so much deeper then it is. I don't only go to the cinema to be entertained, but I certainly don't go to it wanting to walk out feeling like shit. 21 Grams was a damn good movie, but I'll be cringing if this is another Amores Perros.

Ok, I've updated the chart. I've added in a BFCA column, as well as made overall improvements to the charts. I've noticed that the BFCA grades are contrasting with RT and metacritic, which are both in line pretty well with eachother.
I highlighted the columns in different shades for RT, metacritic, and BFCA. I also highlighted the top 5 critically acclaimed films with over 100 reviews, and will keep tabs on that throughout the season. I also have direct links for the film's RT page, if you check out the listing in the "film" column. I did some work on the second post, too.

The Last King of Scotland is at 100% RT with an average of 7.9. Infamous is off to a rough start with only 2 out of 6 fresh and an average of 5.2.
Thanks for all the work, Mav.

Is Volver eligible to be nominated for Best Picture (and Best Foreign at the same time)??

Yes, since it's scheduled to be released in the U.S. in November.

Yeah, they're getting tired, but I if it's quality I dont mind.
I always thought Babel would be the film to take that 4th or 5th spot, I highly doubt it's a major contender.

SERIOUSLY... there is yet not one truly reliable contender.
It seems as though we have before us all the films that could make it into the shortlist, yet I just don't see any of them as anything close to locks. I have no idea what to think of this year's race as of now.

ok, so after that rant... this is what I came up with
Best chances so far
Babel
The Departed
In the running
Bobby (really iffy on this one but a best pic nom may be the only way to award the movie/cast with anything)
Dreamgirls
Flags of our Faters
The Good German
The Last King of Scotland
Other Contenders
Breaking and Entering
Little Children
The Queen
Volver (only so low because there is a foreign film category... otherwise I'd place it in the top category)
