It's released at a great time. Jackass may be long gone, but between DVD releases of Jackass, The Movie, Viva La Bam, and Wildboyz, the name has been living well for the past four years. I think it'll do well, and I hope to see a second sequel eventually. No "Viva La Bam" or "Wildboyz" movies, though. Just the entire cast of jackasses.

Sure, all members of Jackass are enjoying moderate to large popularity at the moment, but Jackass has been gone for so long, and although other smaller shows with some of the same stars are still fairly successful (Although Viva La Bam has died down considerably) nothing could match when Jackass was at its peak, right around the time the film came out. It should do decent but probably a solid 10 million less than its predecessor.

No major comedy out there in the moment, this will fill the void.
Opening weekend - $22.2 million
Total gross - $58 million

Hmmm, I see this being downloaded or rented more than kids paying $12 (or whatever the price is now) to see this in a theatre.
$15 OW / $27 MAX TOTAL

I think the box-office might be too dead at this moment for a 20 mil opener, let alone 25 mil+. Something tells me that The Covenant, Black Dahlia, and Gridiron Gang all disappointing might be more of a case of nobody being interested in movies in this September, rather than those movies' caliber of performance themselves. Gridiron Gang in particular looked no less appealing than Coach Carter, and only 14 mil opening weekend? Jackass could very well fall below 20 mil because the box-office is too terrible right now, if nobody is seeing anything else, they're less likley to go out of their way to rush to Jackass... if that makes sense.

Oh please, Gridirong Gang had much less appeal then Coach Carter. It's a lot easier to identify with a movie about a high school team then a prison one, and the marketing for the latter was much, much better (The stupid Fort Minor song, Xzibit and The Rock, and how cliche the whole thing looked didn't give the movie a whole lot of credibility.) Movies may not be able to make as much as they can in the summer, but it's not like a 20 million opener isn't possible for a movie with a strong fanbase and the market to itself like Jackass. If that was somehow the case, Gridiron Gang wouldn't have passed 7 million. I think that Jackass has much more appeal then the releases this month, nothing these last two weekends has looked very interesting.

Opening Weekend: $22 million
U.S. Total: $58 million
The series has stayed fairly popular and having Knoxville as a draw on his own helps. The R-rating (which eliminates the under-17 fan base, which there is quite a bit of)is really the only thing stopping it from being bigger theatrically.

Why was the first one not downloaded/rented and made over $20 million opening weekend?

If the first one could manage a weekend over $20 million with the R-rating (keeping many under-17 fans out), this one most likely can as well, seeing as it has more theatres and a big enough fan base over the age of 17.

I'm going to side with Shack here. I don't think Jackass will be the remedy for the slow B.O. IMO, it would take a stellar film to spark interest this month, and this isn't it. I'm not so sure even Open Season will light a fire, as it's been tracking below $20M for weeks.

I question if the whole Jackass thing was just a brief phenomenon - one that has faded into sophomoric medicority since the show and first film. This will bring out those who want to see idiots doing mindless, dangerous stunts, but I won''t be surprised if this severely disappoints.

While I stick with my 27 million opening, I wouldn't be surprised if it goes over 30. The buzz is just plain great.

As much as I think a film like this is an embarrassment to the industry and society as a whole, it does have substantial buzz, and I agree that low 30's is a possibility.

I decided to go back and check this thread. I feel kinda proud that I went so high on the OW, even before the teaser changed people's opinion about how well it would do.
I underestimated the legs, though. Where does everyone think it will stop at for total gross?
