I've seen it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and after all that priase it was ultimately disappointing. I enjoy Jeunet's style and style-wise Amelie was great, pretty much flawless, but I could care less for the story and all characters except for Amelie herself. Audrey Tatou delivers a nice and adorable performance. She's perfect in the Amelie role. However, I couldn't help, but be annoyed by the "quirky" side characters, especially by that vegetables vendor. Sorry, I don't mind "quirky", but in this film the quirky characters seemed to exist with the sole purpose of being quirky and I just didn't care for them and developed a deep aversion against most of them after some while. The "plot" of the film didn't do anything to me either.

Certainly, Jeunet's attention to detail and the technical achievements are to be admired here. The cinematography, the editing and the general visuals are great here. The film's music is the best aspect about it since it stuck with me for long when the film was already over. Other than all the technicals and Tatou's performance, there was nothing at all in this film that struck a cord with me.

A Very Long Engagement is a far more interesting and accomplished film, in my opinion.

I Just Met the Most Charming Girl: Amelie

Amelie is a completely charming and magical modern-day fairy tale. It is also a real movie, in that it uses the tools of film to tell the story in a moving way, something that is common to a few of my top ten of 2001 (e.g. Moulin Rouge, Waking Life).

Very funny, very sweet (in the melancholy French manner), very well told tale.

Have to agree with Lecter, it disappointed me. It starts off wonderfully telling about everyone's likes, and showing Amelie growing up, but after a while it just turns so aimless, it kind of halts itself and just continues on doing the same thing, showing her helping these people little by little, I didn't really get into it that much. Audrey was good though.

How is this so high on IMDB? Crazy.

Visually stunning and quite entertaining as well. Audrey Tautou is adorable and completely endearing. A real delight.

I actually quite loved it. Stylistically and visually it's stunning, of course; Jeunet is a wizard behind the camera. The quick editing and flashy cinematography suits the whimsical tone perfectly. But it doesn't stop there. The quirky side characters are interesting instead of annoying (for the most part) and the story is delightfully light and frothy. And, furthermore, it's got a great sense of humour. A modern fairy tale with a sharp comedic edge.

A masterpiece! Amelie is the closest you will get to pure art with a film. It just looks and feels like a living painting, with a beautiful and sad story about a young girl who tired to make everyone around her happy, but couldn't find happiness herself. Audrey Tatou was ROYALLY oscar-snubbed in her best performance ever, and one of the best performances ever in general. All of the actors are spectacular, but what is most impressive is the STUNNING cinematography, which makes the film unique. Funny, captivating and sad, Amelie is a triumph in every sense.

I've never been much of a fan so I don't really get why this is one of the most remembered foreign films in recent history.

The opening credits and the next five minutes or so are amazing; not so much for the rest.

Because its one of the few foreign films kind enough to actually consider its audience, create some form of a narrative, and have genuinely engaging characters.
