Are there any Fleischer fans besides me?
The title says it all.
In case you don't know who they are, the Fleischer Brothers, Max and Dave, made cartoons in the 20's, 30's and 40's. They were the main competitors of Walt Disney. They made Betty Boop, Popeye, and Superman cartoons.
The reason why I became a fan is because of the Color Classics. Mostly because they were among the most beautiful cartoons ever produced, and also the weirdest, in a wonderful way that is (especially the big eyes on every character, which gives them more expression). They invented something Disney didn't invent first, multiplanes and 3D backgrounds. They used something called the Stereo-optical process, which animates the characters with backgrounds that are actually 3D models, which were built on a turn-table. The songs they produced were among the most memorable songs, and the themes were often darker and more mature than Disney, which I like. But they were often known for the offbeat brand of humor as well.
This leads to their two animated features, Gullivers Travels, and Mr. Bug Goes to Town. They were long forgotten in after the 50's. So I wonder if there are anymore fans in here.

I am a big animation fan and love the Fleischer works, especially the earlier Betty Boop cartoons -- the ones with Cab Calloway for instance. You can certainly tell that these were New York cartoons, as opposed to Disney's lighter California ones!
It's a shame more people haven't seen these classics...

Indeed.
I agree with you on the New York part, since Disney Cartoons are known for natural, and magical ways of defeated an enemy, but with the Fleischers, the character literally beat each other up, which gives them that East Coast attitude.

Well, also the settings -- in Fleischer, the characters wander around cities and listen to jazz music. Even Popeye, who was a sailor man in a small sea village in the comic strips, lived in a tenement walk-up in a Fleischer cartoon.
