Even though it isnt even out yet, I would think WTC has a MUCH better chance at getting nominated over U93, early word is great like U93 but it's also a more hollywood film with a big name attached to it. Though I still dont think either will get nominated.

I think WTC will suffer under U93's great reviews, as there will be comparisons in which WTC will pale and eventually end up with mediocre reviews.

As I said, facts are all for U93. There has never been a movie of this kind that was not nominated.

So far none of the early reviews mention how it pales in comparison to U93, they're just as strong, if not even stronger.

From Poland
Quote:
As you might have guessed, I think World Trade Center is the first serious contender to be nominated for Best Picture this year. I hate the release date. It really feels to me like a November movie. I wanted the sharp sting of cold air on my face as I walked out into the street. I wanted a hot drink and a long conversation with a fire crackling nearby. This is a heavy, heavy movie to be hitting America in August.

But the weight I felt on my chest walking out of the theater was much like the weight I felt after Munich, after Amadeus, after Million Dollar Baby, after In The Bedroom, after The Pianist, after In America. It was the weight of something that touched me in a deep, almost inexplicable way, greater than the sum of its parts.

What happened at the World Trade Center is a bigger deal ( sorry to say, though both are incredibly awful events ) then flight 93 and if reviews are this good, then it'll easily get rid of U93's oscar chances. Again it just has many more things going for it, release date, big star, big director, bigger tragedy, and it has a better chance at succeeding at the BO which would help its chances even more. U93 is a MUCH smaller film with no stars, no director, only thing it had going for it was it's great reviews that didnt really help it's BO much, since the film just faded away i'd say. I dont know what these facts are you speak of.

Well I'm happy Stone seems to have rebounded, I don't think this will be an Oscar movie, but it's nice to know he hasn't lost his mind.

Levy liked it and gave it a positive review, but the grade was an average B, and he called it conventional and simple, even if he said that that "isn't a bad thing". Personally, the one thing that really came across in the trailer was just how conventional and sappy it looked, so his comments are not reassuring for me.

I'm hoping for the best though, because I would love, love, love all of the haters of all 9/11 oriented films to be put in their place (and the two biggie 9/11 films of this year get great reviews). United 93 already got fantastic reviews; we just have to wait for the reviews for this one to come in.

I also agree that World Trade Center might unfortunately pale in comparison to United 93. Even if the reviews are good for the film in general, it could pale simply because United 93 was so very well received. World Trade Center has to get a high average rating like United 93, I hope.

PEACE, Mike.

It's not like Levy went head over heels for U93.

Quote:
Paul Greengrass's "United 93" was more exciting to watch on purely technical and visceral levels, though I couldn't rationalize any particular reason to see the movie, since it didn't offer any new info or angle about that flight. It also suffered from being released rights after the airing of two decent TV films on the subject (both nominated for Emmys, by the way).

Quote:
In contrast, "World Trade Center" has a larger scope, is less thrilling but also more emotionally felt and touching, though like Greengrass's film, it mostly recreates events, characters, and feelings, without much commentary or editorializing.

Quote:
As noted, the scale of "World Trade Center" is wider, if not deeper or more ambitious than "United 93." Stone also tell the stories of the fighters' wives, Donna McLoughlin (Maria Bello) and Allison Jimeno (Maggie Gyllenhaal), their families, and children.

Which one wins out? The one more thrilling or the one deeper and more emotional?

i think hollywoodland would have a shot cause oscar rumors are swirling for all four of its main stars especially affleck according to joblo, which would ultimatly ead to a best director nomination, and then best pic.

I have no idea. But it's pretty safe to say that nothing we have seen (i.e. hit theatres) thus far this year is going to get bp or bd nominations. I had thought Inside Man would be last year's Crash, and prior year's Eternal Sunshine (which fell short). But nothing carried enough buzz through the summer.

We might not even get acting noms from anything we've seen thus far. Maybe Streep for Prada, and that's technically summer, not first half of the year even. Bleh. Lackluster beginning to the year, imo. No big surprises.

You misunderstood my post. I'm not trying to start a comparison contest for his reviews. I am worried by what he chose to say, and not that his review is "more or less negative" or "more or less positive" than his review for United 93. When he says that the movie is conventional, and that really struck me after watching the trailer, then I'm worried.

Like I said, I've been the largest supporter of 9/11 films on the boards, I think, while everyone else is all "too soon, too disrespectful, blah blah blah". So I hope Stone pulled it off.

PEACE, Mike.

My current picks:

1. Dreamgirls
2. The Good Shepherd
3. Babel
4. Goya's Ghosts
5. Running With Scissors

If Ghosts doesn't get released this year, I'll go with Flags Of Our Fathers, even though I really don't want to.

This script review for Flags http://scriptzone.forumculture.net/ftop ... REVIEW.htm has got me so hyped for the film, it sounds f'in incredible. If pulled off right I think it'll be incredibly hard for any film to beat it come Oscars, cant wait for the trailer.

I know this thread is only for Picture/Director, but...

There is no way Little Miss Sunshine will fail to secure a screenplay nomination, after seeing it last night. It has one of the best screenplays in years.

The Departed will not be a player in this game. Neither will either 9/11 movie, unless everything flops like last year and the well-respected United 93 can fight it's way back in Crash-style with a strong marketing campaign. Very, very unlikely, though.

Ofcourse it wont, Loyal and Lecter are just dreaming. I'll be there opening day and im hoping for the best, but everything so far is screaming no chance in hell. I'd be willing to bet WB will be pushing Fountain or Blood Diamond more then Departed. Early word is good not great, they decided not to debut it at the Toronto Film Festival, it's coming out in the beginning of October, and it's a gangster/crime flick, it'll have to be incredibly good to be considered come Oscars. I do think Marty could get that 5th spot filler without the film being nominated though, because well he's Marty.

I am pretty sure that: The Prestige, The Fountain, The Departed and A Good Year will not factor much in the race this year.

I definitley agree with The Prestige and The Fountain, there's just no way those films are contenders.

A Good Year... only the trailer makes me doubt it, it seems like the story doesn't have nearly enough complications. Otherwise, I'd count it in, at the very least Scott and Crowe are very much in the race.

And I don't care what is being said here, I still think The Departed is a big contender.

:)

That surprises me to hear from you. Is there any special reason you don't see anything for that one?

Maybe because it's a remake? (and even if it's directed by Scorsese, it doesn't mean much... afterall Cape Fear didn't get a Picture nom ;) )

Nicholson should be a contender, though

Nicholson is definitely a contender, as the role is perfect for an elder, established actor. Anthony Wong gave an amazing performance in the original and rode it to pretty much sweep the category in Asia.

On a separate note, I think Infernal Affairs will only some more votes to push itself into IMDb's top 250, as the vote distribution looks quite fine.

Anthony Wong's character is played by Martin Sheen, though ;) Eric Tsang played Nicholson's character and as great as Nicholson is, I'm not sure he'll top Tsang's performance as Sam who was pitch-perfect.

Eh, IMDB is very weird.

Why are these films nowhere in the Top 250?

http://imdb.com/title/tt0476735/

http://imdb.com/title/tt0379786/

http://imdb.com/title/tt0424345/

Top 1000 voters are given way too much weight. It's pretty much they do what they want with films...
