I just have that feeling I'll love this one... (just like I had with The Village)

(unfortunately, it comes out here in late september as usual.. )

What I find really weird is that it stands at 22% with the critics but at 78% (which is the extreme opposite) with RT users...

Did anyone else think the movie's theme -- having faith, etc -- was almost a complete rehash of Signs? That scene where Giamatti is having that emotional talk while holding Story is almost a carbon copy of when Mel Gibson was talking to god while holding his son.

Be that as it may, the scene in LitW is much, much better. I broke down during it.

If The Village taught me anything, it's that I shouldn't expect what I see in the trailer for an M. Night movie. And it worked well here.

With that out of the way, Lady in the Water isn't an incredible movie, nor even a great one. But, it is a good movie, a good story, and it has great actors involved in the two leads. After expecting a lot less than what the trailer showed, I was actually surprised by quite a bit, and it was a good kind of surprise.

My complaints? It is a bit slow. A bit unusual. A bit confusing. I was expecting some sort of twist, and luckily, there wasn't one. I think that, similar to The Village, a twist would have ruined the movie.

For now, I'm giving this a B. It might be a B+ or a B- after a while, so I'll stick to a B.

While I'm at it, I found the scene with Bob Balaban predicting his own fate with the creature to be entirely out of place. May be just me.

I never meta-story I didn't like!

I dug it - to me, it was part of the whole purposefully exposed skeleton of the movie's story - in that particular scene it was especially amped out for comic relief amidst all the more melancholy aspects of the story...

So those that hated the movie, would the movie have been better if they made it into a a miniseries where they better explain the tenants action and why they led to believe

I didn't say I hated it, it just felt a little weird and out of place.

While I'm at it, Bob Balaban could play Sloane's brother on "Alias".

It's as bad as they say it is. Convoluted, poorly paced, characters that are useless and a story that is so void of intellect and interest that i am truly shocked that anyone would fund this. Giamatti is such a ridiculously good actor that he actually made me interested in his character and his character only, hence the only reason this doesn't get a 1.

3/10

A matter of opinion of course. But LITW is just bad. Bad everything....except for Giamatti.

Love it. The acting by all was fantastic (especially Giamatti) and the story was endlessly interesting, not just for what it says about mythology and the power it can have on all of us but also that it was a different sort of film. Sure, Shyamalan is definitely egocentric but I'm more willing to forgive such behavior when the film is like this one.

One last thing, it's too bad the film was so poorly received because Giamatti deserves an Oscar nomination. He was consistently superb.

Grade - A-

As much as i do not like this film, i will agree with you 100% with that statement. Giamatti is a sick sick actor. And i would have no problem with him being nominated.

If Giamatti wasn't in this movie, I would have probably went closer to a C. Not only his acting, but a lot of the film depended on how much I believed him.

Your expectations seem low, so yeah, I think you'd like it at least a little.

Just saw it again off of a downloaded cam rip and it's definitely a better watch the second time around, knowing what to look for and being acclimated to the tone. The ending hit me pretty hard this time, Giamatti's breakdown and those shots from underwater as the eagle takes Story away. Gorgeous stuff and patented Shyamalan. My grade stays at a B+.

Oh, and James Newton-Howard really hit it out of the ballpark again with his music. I got my hands on the soundtrack and there are some truly breathtaking cues and wonderful motifs woven throughout. The first track, the one that plays over the opening monologue, is my favourite. I hope, much like the Spielberg/Williams duo, that this partnership between Night and James never ends.

So I saw it again last night. I enjoyed it even more. I was looking for more things to notice and tried to focus in on the little things the story had to offer. It was such an enjoyable experience to see such an enchanting story being told.

9.8/10 A+

m.n.s. needs to hire a new marketing group. It's as simple as that. The Village disappointed because it wasn't marketed for what it really was.

They did it again with lady in the water. For some reason they think it's a supernatural thriller. but it's not. it's a sweet, real fairy tale. I have not seen a movie like this in years. It did have flaws so by no means is it a perfect movie, but it's not crap the way crictics and some are saying. I was actually motivated and involved by and with everything in the movie.

I don't think people realize that when the trailer says "A Bedtime Story by M. Night Shyamalan" that's ex-ZACTLY what they mean. :O
