DreamWorks Animation is one step closer to putting last year's "Shrek 2" DVD debacle behind it.
The Securities and Exchange Commission's L.A. office recommended on Thursday that an investigation into Jeffrey KatzenbergJeffrey Katzenberg's toontoon studio be terminated with no enforcement action.
While the SEC itself still has to make a formal decision, recommendation makes it very likely that DWA will escape government sanction for failing to warn investors, before first-quarter earnings were announced last year, that returns on the "Shrek 2" DVD were running much higher than anticipated, causing the company to miss guidance.
DreamWorks Animation is still facing shareholder lawsuits over the incident, however.

i think we could see the weekend estimates go up or down by a few million
Saturday can be 44.6 million easily. So that can stay.
Sunday did not drop 29%.

This will, as predicted, be made to stick as long as the actuals remain close enough. They are already clearly grabbing money from Sunday based on the other drops in the top 10. All they had to be was close enough and no studio will really call them on it, since they will pull the same stunt later on (and have in the past...)

it's fucking bullshit when studios do that.

Even if this is BS, even if it did not "really" make it, the fact that it came close enought for them to fudge it is incredible.
I've long since given up expecting that estimates and daily actuals carry the exact truth, they serve other purposes.

Even mega-frontloaded POA dropped only -24% on it's first Sunday. Disney fudged the numbers.

I really don't see the big deal. If they did fudge the estimates, and when the actuals come out Pirates doesn't reach 100mil in 2 days then they don't have the record. The only thing that would really be affected would be the news coverage on access hollywood and the like. Who cares? People who watch those shows for entertainment news have no idea about box office anyway, and even if it's reported on the news as breaking 100mil in 2 days it doesn't matter. The general public doesn't care about the specifics of these things, only we do. If the estimates are fixed, it won't carry over to the actuals as other studios would not stand for that. There is a difference between the "007" stuff with the Bond franchise, or the "666" with the Omen, this is millions of dollars (possibly) being manipulated. Before i get all huffy about it, i'll wait for actuals.

Quote: Depp's 'Pirates' plunders record $132M . . . . The sequel surpassed that total in its first day alone, taking in $55.5 million Friday to beat the previous single-day record of $50 million, set last year by "Star Wars: Episode III  Revenge of the Sith." With $44.7 million on Saturday, "Dead Man's Chest" also became the first movie to top $100 million in just two days.

Ah well. Fox gave themselves the 2nd best animated opening for a day. I expect this to drop a couple million as well.

Actually, there's a good reason to believe that the Saturday number isn't fudged: Disney would have upped it just a little more to take the Saturday record as well. They could have even taken the 350K needed off of Sunday and still held the Sunday record as well.

Good point, they were very close to taking Shrek's Saturday record to complete the trifecta and give the 2 days thing a little more "credibility" but that didn't happen.

Or they could've decrease the Friday estimate. Even the Friday estimate rose on actuals.
