Given the DVD era box office trends, its going to take some time for ticket price inflation for it to happen, and now is not the time. If Sith could not even come close off an opening day of $50M, I don't really see any reason to think any film can until we see opening day numbers that track closer to $100M.
Its got a far better shot at the opening day record and the opening weekend record than it does at the other waterbourne saga.
Thanks,
someone with a rational opinion here.

Sith never had a chance, considering how narrow of a fanbase it had. Most average people rolled their eyes at the movie. It also had very little rewatchability. Therefore, the comparison is moot.
That does not mean Pirates can beat Titanic though. I'll go get drunk if it does.

It's not a joke thread.
Or is it?

To be fair, DreamWorks dropped the ball on Ring 2s marketing.

But it will only be a joke if we are wrong. You see, that's the brilliant thing about it: either way we win. All you need is some dishonestly mixed in with some genuine insanity.

Luckily for you I'm going back to work in a few minutes. But I'm serious about it being quite possible. Maybe even likely; it's doing as well today as I ever hoped.

No I'm just saying even you aren't above slipping in to fanboyism.
Now Lady in the Water...that will break Titanic's record.

Less fanboyism and more poor reasoning.

While I agree with your post, I most say that I saw ROTS 3 times in two days. It has very solid rewatchability, IMO. Far moreso than TPM, which miraculously ougrossed it.

ROTS grossed less then TPM because of TPM.

Amazing how often when a usually consistanly solid predictor goes against the grain, suddenly all of the movies he or she predicted incorrectly comes into the spotlight.

A movie needs people of all demographic groups considering repeat viewings to have a shot against Titanic. Quote: ROTS grossed less then TPM because of TPM.
Never have been more correct. If TPM was standalone, it would have been hard pressed to reach $100 million.

Phantom Menace would've passed $200m on pure spectacle, even without the Star Wars legacy.

Very unlikely. It would have managed a $45m opening and croaked immediately thereafter. Audiences had already seen true spectacle in the likes of Independence Day. PM looks pretty hokey in comparison.

Regardless of what you thought of the film, ID4:
1. Is better than TPM
2. Definitely delivers on spectacle, in the literal sense
3. Did manage to gross $300m as a standalone, original film
