 Can POTC 2 beat Titanic?
Oh, I wanted to create this for so long, but never wanted to take the beating I would get. heh
2 years ago when I started predicting over 400m I thought it had a 1% chance. Earlier this year at 515m I gave it 20%. This week 30%. Now with the way it's selling I think it's more likely then not. Yes, I said it, I think this will probably beat Titanic.
Yeah, you might attribute this to my getting carried away with the hype and sellouts, but seriously it might beat Sith midnight and is having the best ever online ticket sales. And it's not a fanboy film, which puts it so far ahead of everything I can't even fathom it.
If it gets over 65m Friday you all need to start considering it.

I doubt it beat Sith's midnight, first of all. At most, I think we could see around $13 million from Pirates' midnight showings.

To tell the truth, the thought crossed my mind. Not because the midnights were selling out
or because it could do 50M+ for Friday, but because the people in the parking lot after the
movie were talking about seeing it again, and I want to see it again. The only way a film
beats Titanic is if it has replay value (check), and a large female audience (check). I'm not
saying it's going to do it, but there is a chance. Especially considering this is the last major
film this summer.

I've seen dozens of crowd reports indicating that it was at, above or near the same level. Denver and many other cities entirely sold out. I see a minimum of 13m, and about 15m. But 20m isn't impossible.

I hope so. But it doesn't have the faux-prestige of Titanic.

The WOM isn't quite as good as the original movies word-of-mouth, so no, I really doubt it.
#2 of all time is still achievable, though.

No way! Not only is it unrealistic, I just don't want it to happen. I loved Titanic and was really disappointed with Dead Man's Chest (I gave it a C).

If you really want to get people going, make a poll asking how much it will beat ROTK by.

I'm the one person who isn't ready to send you to the loony bin. But nah, I think we can rule out Titanic (unless it opens to $180+ million).

$100 billion dollars.
It would be ironic having one ship movie beat out another.

It won't beat TTT.
I know a company that provides straight jakets. We could order you one.

I assume you are referring to the Frodo-Sam ship.

It won't beat Titanic, but it has a legitimate shot at topping Star Wars' $460 million for #2 all time. I could see another Shrek 2-like run here from an opening of $130-140 million.

Friend-ship, aye. Nay, I was referring to Titanic. It would be lovely, but so would be moving to SF. Some things just won't be.

Um, much as I'd like to see the boat sunk, no.
Given the DVD era box office trends, its going to take some time for ticket price inflation for it to happen, and now is not the time. If Sith could not even come close off an opening day of $50M, I don't really see any reason to think any film can until we see opening day numbers that track closer to $100M.
Its got a far better shot at the opening day record and the opening weekend record than it does at the other waterbourne saga.
