Shrek 2 and The Phantom Menace are two of the most mediocre films I've ever seen.

Spider-Man isn't that amazing to me either (though the sequel was a big improvement). You just have to have a really wide audience.

I think you meant to say that what pirates has contrived sceneriaos, a standardized plot, drag queen pirates, predictable action, overemphasised classism, poor writing and simple humor.

but its much better then most stuff this year... and in reality the only films i have liked this year have been cars and X-men3.

Pirates made a lot of money because it was different from other films, however as pirates as become a pop culture icon the next two films will be widely successfull.

The fact is people won't match great films which aren't entertaining. Batman was a great film and was very good but people said "TO MUCH TALKING", " I WANTED TO SEE BATMAN BEAT UP PEOPLE NOT LECTURE US"

Well you and I haven't seen PoTC2 yet. I don't have much faith in it which is why it won't get 10 dollars from me. You are ritgh though it is aggitating for me ithat no good films have come out this year.

imo taking an elitest view on each movie just ruins every movie you will ever watch. Just wanting to have a fun time usally imo makes most movie fun and entertaing. The main purpose of movies is to entertain.

However Like today i watched Lawerence Of Arabia and i bet a majority of the general audience couldn't watch this film even though i loved it. Why, its too long, too much talking, the hero is actually bad, not enough action.

Yet the only films that really bugged me have been ID4,PoTC,NT,(actually kind of liked The Rock), adn Snake Eyes.

ID4 imo is not a good film however it is a widely fun film. I think pirates will be always those movies critics don't really like but is beloved by the general movie going public.

Few movies have pleased both groups.

Lotr is the best example of that.

Imagine Manny if ID5 was released this year to become the biggest grossing film of the year.

It only seemed different. It was still the same old movies you see every day just a different setting.

Maybe it was Johnny Depp, he was the reason why the first movie was different in any way. A strong performance by a single actor that is the highlite of the movie is rare in these days.

Depp did recieve rave reviews for his acting in PoTC that was a definite factor, also Orlando Bloom was another factor.

Except for DP07, who will be calling anything under 140 million a huge disappointment, heh.
