That's true, but in that case I think the weekends would be a tad smaller (in my predictions) just to even things out.

Actually Pirates was a very intelligent movie with complex plot and snappy dialogue. I wouldn't call America stupid for liking it. Shrek 1, now that was for stupid people.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
i disagree... i thought the plot was weak. the best part of the film was the look of it.
my problem was the feel of the movie... it was too disney. too much stupid jokes and not enough serious parts.
i would have loved the film if it was done like master and commander, which in my opinion, is 10 times better than pirates of the caribbean.

POTC was never intended to be a serious movie. It was always supposed to be a fun and goffy movie for families.

I see something like this currently:
Friday - 48.0 million
Saturday - 38.4 million(-20%)
Sunday - 26.9 million(-30%)
Opening weekend: 113.3 million
Total - 320 million(2.82 multiplier)
And yes, we will be disappointed that the records didn't fall.

I personally see 80 million being the ceiling for opening weekend.

I will agree that the ending fizzled badly, but the plot itself was very strong.
You can't compare PotC to M&C. They're different genres, like comparing The Breakup to Brokeback Mountain. What about people who would have loved M&C, if only it had been done like PotC?

Magnus, how would Pirates 1 do now? I think it would do less. But not because of pirating -haha- or lack of legs. It would do less because of Orlando Bloom. Bloom was a much bigger draw back then, coming off of FotR and TTT (instead of Troy and Kingdom of Heaven.) Bloom fans bumped up the opening weekend, and provided a much larger pool from which to generate WOM. If it opened now, OW would be smaller, but the percent drops due to WOM and legs would be the same.

actually, i can compare them. they were both released in the same year and they both dealt with very similar ideas. the only major difference in the plot between the two is that pirates was more fantastical and unrealistic, while master and commander was a realistic portrayal of what could have happened in the napoleonic age.
however, there are plenty of comparisons between the two.
the majority of the movies are on the sea, on a boat or they are on caribbean/south american islands.
both have very popular captains, russell crowe and johnny depp.
both have much action
both were released in 2003. one in the summer, one in the winter.
sure, there are some distinct differences in style, but when its all said and done... these were the only two "sea" movies released in 2003 and with this, we have seen a major interest in pirate-sea-ship movies.
the perfect example is the recent hallmark channel release blackbeard. a mix of humor and serious action.
when you compare the two movies, i see more relations between the two than any other film released at that time.

When all is said and done, it was the distinct different in style that you objected to...and that laundry list of similarities only shows how incomparable those movies are...Oh I give up.

the style of both films seems like the only major difference to me and in that difference is why i dont like pirates of the caribbean and i like master and commander.

The running time for this is over 2.5 hours. Honestly, that isn't the best news. The biggest complaint the original got was its running time, so going even longer isn't very smart.

As long as it's good, it won't be a big deal to most. I agree that 2.5 hours is a long time to sit in a seat, though. My ass usually goes numb after 2.

I think the running time is 2:30 minutes not over. Well that can't be good for Superman either which is 2:37 minutes. I heard people complaing about Da Vinci Code was long they should be complaing about these two.

People complained about The Da Vinci Code being long because you could tell it's long. Films like Pirates of the Caribbean didn't seem long despite being the same length because they're non-stop fun. Da Vinci was pretty boring.

Well, Pirates did drag at the end.

I had heard PotC was 140 or 145 minutes... And I *think* they're including the end credits in the runtime, and with all the CG and set and stunt and etc. work done for PotC, those credits are going to be extremely long. Plus, there's the possibility of an extra scene after the credits.
So I don't know that the actual movie itself is going to be much longer, if at all, than the first.

Yeah, those credits will probably be like 11min instead of 10 now.

DVC was long and it sure felt long. And that's coming from someone who loved the book (one of my absolute favorites) and really liked the movie. (B+ for the movie)
However, straightforward action films don't tend to feel that long, so POTC 2 shouldn't get a lot of complaints about being too long.

Cutting twenty minutes from Pirates 1 would've made it a better film.
