I see POTC breaking about 5 records. Not sure what else might be challenged at this point.

Just to show how big The Omen's opening day really is, it opened higher than last year's second most-anticipated film of the year, King Kong.

POTC2 won't top SW3's opening day.

Yup.
Thus it won't become fastest to $100 million either.

Thank-you Dark Shape!!
Where is the insanity for POTC2 coming from? Bigger than SW OD? Are you people smoking paint thinner or something? SW and POTC, with all due respect to Depp, are not even close to each other. I don't doubt that it will be big, but come on. There's no way it makes 50 mill in one day.

baumer72 wrote: There's no way it makes 50 mill in one day. I kind of disagree with that. Pirates 2 is going to be huge, no doubt. But it doesn't have the rush fanbase Star Wars has. As much as Tina likes to as to say otherwise, POTC isn't some cult phenomenon where people get together and dress like pirates, wanting to live in that world. It might top $50m, but if it happens, it'll be on Saturday. The franchise is very family orientied, so they might sit Friday out. Personally, I think it'll go something like 44/45/37 (for a $126m opening weekend, if my math's right). It'll be very, very big (and will probably top Spidey's record), but with the way box office is nowadays, I don't think it's going to make people freak out. Magnus101 wrote: X3 and SW aren't even close to each other yet X3 OD was 5m off from ROTS(which is still quite a bit).
I'd argue again that X3 is destined for much more of a first-day rush than POTC2.

What'll be really interesting is if Pirates 2 doesn't beat the opening weekend record. People will freak.

I don't think I've ever seen a higher opening weekend expectation.

But most people weren't. Some were going as low as $70m opening weekend. I don't think anybody realistically has Pirates under $100m.

Magnus101 wrote: excel wrote: superman will retake biggest tuesday as well as biggest july 4th weekend Um....excel no it won't. If it was being released on a Friday, yes. With a Wed. release, no chance.
dunno which your referring to.
theres a great chance for biggest tuesday.
Day 1: 23.9 million
Day 2: 15.75 million – 34%
Day 3: 25.0 million +57% % due to some thinking it opens on the 30th
Day 4: 26.5 million +11% word Day 1: 23.9 million of mouth and kid
Day 5: 24.9 million -6%
Day 6: 21.9 million -12%
Day 7: 14.4 million - 34%
those drops are in line with wotw and spidey 2.
as for the july 4th record, it would need 88 million from friday the 30th to tuesday the 4th.
a weekend of 60.5 million with a monday of 17.5 and and 10.5 on tuesday is all it needs, and superman will get much better numbers then that

I do. In fact I have a hard time seeing this going over 100 million. 90 may be possible.

Comparing The Perfect Storm, an adult-aimed film with no fanbase whatsoever involved to Superman Returns, which you consider to have a "massive" fanbase, is quite funny.

I don't think POTC2 will do it either, but it certainily is capable of it.
It also dropped 29% on a Saturday. Its audience was highly focused on Friday, so it's not THAT surprising.

That was his first comparison with the Perfect Storm.
