Pirates of the Caribbean(COTBP)...
Mr. Depp's talents/persona were taken into account, 'as the concept was formulated'... Trust ME on this.. He was the only anti-hero around..
An apt comparison was also the casting/concept of Robin Williams and One Hour Photo.. In convolution..

Interesting thing happened tonight...

I work at a family entertainment center... So I decided to ask about 50 or so kids which movie they were more excited for... Pirates 2, or Superman...

45 said Pirates 2... 3 said it was a tie... and 2 said Superman.

It's the whole movie, which includes Depp. If it had Depp but did not have the same writers and director I would not be anticipating it AT ALL.

As to Depp's performance, too much is made of it. Was it a good performance? Yes of course but it's not magic, he basically just acted like he was drunk all the time, even when he wasn't carrying a bottle. I don't really buy that he added a lot more than the script, to me that was Hollywood hype. They always do that with big movies, act like the star did more on his own than he really did. It sounds boring to say "soandso hit their mark and read their lines well".

Yeah, Pirates 3 with no Johnny Depp wouldn't be as successful as the first two. But I'd bet my left nut it'd still make more than a Johnny Depp film with no Pirates.

I'd agree with that. But I think a Pirates film without Johnny Depp would struggle past the $100 million barrier.

Depp doesn't really pick that many big movies, and when h does they usually aren't the best. LIke Once Upon a Time in Mexico, yse he was great in it, but it was god awful. Even his big films that do well like Sleepy Hollow are still dark. Pirates is the rare film he dose that appeals to all moviegiers regardless of age and taste. He makes more arty pictures then anything, as much as people love in him in PotC, that doesn;t mean they are jonsing to see films like Before Night Falls. Overall I like Depp, he not one to sleepwalk through alot of roles. He's the only reason I didn't turn off OUATIM to end the pain.
