Post Sony Playstation 3
The threequel :-o

Quote:
High street games shops have been told by Sony that there will be no PS3 pre-owned sections in their stores as it will be illegal for customers to sell any next-gen PlayStation games that they've bought, retail sources have revealed to GamesRadar.

It seems that Sony is planning to adopt a licensing system that will mean gamers won't own the PS3 titles that they've paid money for. Instead, they will only be purchasing the licence to play the game and that the software itself will still be Sony property - meaning that the disc won't be the customer's to sell.

Hm. I hate the idea of buying pre-owned games, and generally feel it's a stupid idea, but this is the owrst way to go about fixing it.

This reminds me of the time when record companies tried to sue record stores for selling second hand cds of the record companies cds. It will backfire on them

Man, that seems like a poor business decision. It would definitely influence my decision. I buy used games on Ebay all the time.

This will never fly. If a game is really good I have no problem paying full price ($60) however if it's just mediocre most of the time I either pick it up used, Greatest hits, or rent it.

Then again I can see why they want to discourage selling used copies because they get no money off of it and they are already losing a bundle on selling the PS3 system where selling game copies is the only way they get reimbursed

If they are successful at killing the used market, some of the more rare games will be worth big, big bucks. I guess I don't understand how they can make it so you can't buy a used game unless they "marry" the game with a particular system, but then you wouldn't even be able to take a game to a friends house, or if you bought a new system, all your games would be gone?

I'm skeptical about this being true...

Well, I wouldn't go that far!

I doubt Sony is quite that retarded too, but I'm skeptical both ways...

They need more games like Assasins Creed for the PS3
Currently X-box 360 is leading on my list on games I anticipate the most

AC will also be out for the 360. What Sony needs is more first party games that will never be on the 360.

Oh, and are these PS3 screens really running on a PS3 this time, or are they from the 360? Either way, they look nice, but it doesn't look like my kind of game.

Oh, and Sony came out and officially denied the rumor about the 3rd party game sales... so, I guess i-dude was right, they aren't quite that stupid!

The Graphics for this don't look any better than what the 360 would put out of the same title..

Not to brag, but I did say this months and months ago. The games will look virtually no different between the two systems.

Perhaps in 4-5 years when programmers figure out the cell processor and games start to exceed both systems, we may see a slight advanatage to the PS3, but even then I don't think it will be noticeable. It won't be anything like the massive difference between the high quality Xbox and the crappy PS2.

Assassin's Creed guys (Nicholas Cantin and Alex Drouin). It's in Dutch, so translation mine:

OPM: How's your experience with the storage media of the PS3, the HDD and the BluRay disc? And do you have any comparable experience with HD-DVD technology?

M.M.: Our focus is 100% BluRay, so I cannot compare with HD-DVD. I can only say that the new BluRay disc format is truly awesome. The capacity is immense, and the Data Transfer Rate is way beyond what we are used to. And that's really important, because Data Streaming (OPMED: where the console constantly loads new data from disc) is truly the only way to push next-gen games to the limit. The Playstation 3 HDD is something that we have so far given less attention to, because it hasn't been certain all that long yet that it will be standard on every console. Decreasing load-times by copying a part of the game to the HDD is one possibility, though it doesn't matter all that much for a streaming game like ours. But there are tons of other applications, such as the possibility to as it were record your whole game, to be able to watch a replay of it later on. We intend to use the HD optimally, but how, I can't tell yet currently.

Also interesting is this question:

OPM: What do you think about the performance of the graphics chip, the Nvidea RSX?

M.M.: The RSX-chip is also a beast. Not only is it incredibly fast, but just like in the PS2 you can have each Cell-core cooperate with the RSX independently. Other graphics chips also have decent Noraml Mapping- and Shader-capabilities, but RSX adds a lot of additional specialised filters and possibilities, leading to fabulous results in the graphics department. And what is really convenient is that Nvidia has been a market-leader for years, and everyone knows the technology and way of thinking through-and-through. This decreases the learning process considerably.

It seems that in recent polls over in Japan that the Wii is trouncing the PS3.
Quote:
Famitsu Weekly quizzed gamers in its most recent issue on the thorny subject of which hardware they are most excited about, with the survey throwing up some interesting results. The Wii captured 68.8% of the voted, leaving the nearest platform, the PlayStation 3, way behind with a mere 21%, surprising given Japan's love of all things SCE.

Perhaps one telling factor was the announced price of the new Sony machine. When asked their opinion on the massive price-tag set for the PlayStation 3 a resounding 88.4% of readers said it was set too high

http://spong.com/article/10149/Wii:+Mos ... d+in+Japan

I also really enjoyed the recap of Sony's press conference at E3.
http://www.gameklip.com/v/719/

I about died laughing when the guy said "RIIIIDDGGEE RACER" and then touted how Sony's system was so high tech that it could do "real time weapon change". OMG!!! Real time weapon change??!?!?! I've never seen that before!

I'm going to go ahead and officially announce the PS3 as dead in the water. I think we're going to see a failure of epic proportions, especially in relation to the performance of the PS1 and PS2.

Phil Harrison defends Sony from Nintendo plaguerism claims:

Spong wrote:
According to Sony, it did not take its cue for including motion-sensing technology in its revised PlayStation 3 controller from Nintendo, so says Sony Europe executive Phil Harrison. In an interview published by German news outlet Spiegel, Harrison refutes claims and the widely held suspicion that the new design looked to directly steal away some of Nintendo's thunder.

"In a way I understand why people say [we copied Nintendo], but it is a little stupid, if you forgive the phrase. When we brought the PlayStation to the market in 1994, we introduced real-time 3D graphics for the first time. When Nintendo launched its N64 in 1996 it also had 3D graphics, did we say, "Nintendo stole our idea?" Of course not. Such innovations become possible because of a combination of technology, cost and manufacture capacities." Though of course, the idea of playing games in 3D had existed for a long time in the arcades. The idea of controlling games with a motion sensor has not. So the analogy is somewhat flawed.

http://news.spong.com/article/10155

Of course, not only is the analogy flawed... it's ludicrous. Sony introduced real-time 3D graphics for the first time? Poo, I say!

Not only were arcade machines displaying full on real-time 3D graphics before the playstation, but so was the PC, the Saturn (which was, in fact, out before the PSX) and even the SNES (Starfox and the Super FX chip preceded it by over a year). And let's not forget that the PSX was put together from designs Nintendo helped create initially as a CD-ROM add-on for the SNES.

Of course, it could also be argued that while Sony were out with a 3D console before Nintendo, it was Nintendo who were the first to realise the capabilities of 3D environments with analogue control. Before Mario 64, the closest thing Sony had to a functioning 3D platformer was the awful Jumping Flash. After Mario 64 revolutionised the genre, Nintendo's template became the industry standard for all 3D adventure games even to this day.

The fact that only Warhawk was compatible with the new pad at E3 (and that the team had only been told a week before to implement motion sensing control into the game) shows Sony up for the lying, no-good idea thieves they are! That they retracted the old boomerang pad around the same time the Wii controller was announced only makes me more enraged at their spin-jobbery!

In Sony's defense they have a patent from back in 1999 that is for a controler that does exactly what this controller does.

However there is no doubt the decision to implement this was pushed by Nintendo's unveiling of it's controller and Sony's lack of Rumble..
