 Site Name Change?
Don't know if anyone has ever brought this up before...
But it seems to me that if you want more traffic (and then advertising dollars) a name change may be in order.
I have told people about this site and they say "World of KJ? What does that mean? And what does it have to do with movies?" I'm sure it doesn't show up very high on google searches with a name like that.
Perhaps one of the reasons KJ's reviews aren't being documented by Rotten Tomatoes is because with its name, it sounds like some nonfilm site, or something not professional. Maybe you could even get more studio participation with contests and freebies too.
Have you ever considered changing the name to have to do with films in some way? Am I wrong in my assumptions? Or do you even care about these issues?

It's only been mentioned a hundred thousand times Mike.
Personally, I like WorldofLoyal but that's because I'm a dick.
As much as I agree that a name change is in order, something to tie into movies, there are some logistical issues. I think Arsi and I even talked about it last week when we met. It's a Catch-22 for sure.

You brought up a lot of issues in one itty bitty post!
Name change is deffinatly something we have considered, there are unfortunetly a lot of problems that would come with a change.
Other sites have managed with non industry related names (joblo.com comes to mind). But it would be nice if the name was more relevant. Site wasn't started with all this in mind.
As for the other two issues you raise:
Google Searches: these have little to do with the site's domain. A domain like movies.com helps, but only slightly. With a high enough page rank and incoming links, your google traffic for relevant key words will be fine. So this is not a big issue.
RT: The reason we are not documented on RT is because none of our reviewers are in a film critic orginization. That will hopefully change when Dolce re-applies. Once she is in, Zing and Rogue will have a much easier time in being accepted. She is our best critic, and getting her into a critic society is high on our list. Once she is in, then we can get on RT. Also not related to our name.
The reason I wish we could change our name is simply because, like you mention, when you tell people about World of KJ they wonder how it is related to movies. It would be easier if it were self explanitory. Saddly the cons to changing are vast.

I tend to meet new people on a daily basis, and it never fails that whenever I pass over my business card and talk about WoKJ, the conversation goes to what does KJ mean.

I agree a name change is in order, but unless you name the site something like "Movieland!", or "Movies-R-Us!", or "Movies comin' outta my ass!", you'll always get the "What's that mean?" question.

That and there are a lot of negatives to changing your name.
A lot.
Google would Kill us if we changed.

I think it's too late now. I strongly suggested they change the name a year ago (box office bash, the current movie section name, was my suggestion for the name of the whole site), but by now they have established so many contacts that changing the name would confuse everything. And yet at the same time, to be honest I don't see this site becoming what the owners want it to become if it stays with it's current name.
@shack: KJ is Eagle's real life initials of his name.

I suggest Sweet Cuppin' Cakes. dot com.
Actually, I quite like World of KJ. It's vague, it's distinctive, it doesn't seem to mean anything... Sure it doesn't have a lot to do with films, but look at the biggest film sites - C.H.U.D, Ain't It Cool, JoBlo. Two of them have their origins in films, but they're more obscure references than easily identifiable film motifs. If anything, KJ's name helps separate this site from the millions of other sites with "movies" "films" or "box office" in the title. You've just got to work at turning KJ into a brand that people understand and recognise pertains to movies.
Maybe if you pretended the KJ stood for something cinematic. Something that's simultaneously pretentious and self-deprecating. Like "Kino Jerks".

I wouldnt go that far. Perfect example, yesterday I met some guys with Dark Horse Entertainment. It wasn't as if WoKJ elicited snickers. There's also the train of thought that a name becomes a brand after a certain point and WoKJ means something beyond the literal interpretation of KJ.
BTW, WoKJ started out as a King of Queens fan site.

I thought of that too, but couldn't come up with anything. There must be something KJ could stand for....oh I know, hold a contest with a nice reward for the best suggestion.

I actually like Kino Jerks but that only works for our German visitors.

How about Kino Jerky? Dried strips of German (and other) film news in easily digestible chunks.
Alternatively, nay, radically, you could change the meaning of the initials to make it "World Of Known Jams", and actually alter the main site to accommodate a comprehensive database of every preservative known to man.

I don't think you should change it at all. I think you're right with the branding viewpoint.
Having to explain something like that means that people are paying that much more attention to the name than they would otherwise. If you were called something like, I dunno say "Box Office Mojo" or something fairly related, it's just another movie site.
With World of KJ (and WoKJ is a great acronym if you pronounce it as a word IMO ) if when someone who hears about it via word of mouth, or linked to a thread, they'll remember the name because they had to think about it that much more. I did!

If we do stay with it, should we buy the domain http://www.wokj.com and mirror it?
Decisions decisions.

The name is horrible, the initials KJ bring up pain and disgust. but it's too late unless you want to change the identity of the site. You really need to establish that IF AT THIS MOMENT you feel that changing it would be worth it, because if you don't change it now, and your site gets bigger and bigger, then it's going to be a bigger niggle later.
Yes I used the word "niggle".
Personally I think it would be a good time to go for aplaceforterrorists.com
