Post WOKJ "BP Nominees" Club - Picking the 2nd movie
Well, while the discussion on Dangerous Liaisons can still go on in the other thread, I think it's about time to pick our movie for the next 2-weeks-period which should start next Monday. Which means we have exactly a week from now on to decide what movie we will see next.

Please read carefully:
My idea this time was to implement one of xiayun's suggestions for picking the movie. This time around, we will pick a movie to watch from the Best Picture Winners.

Which means: I want five members of the club to suggest a BP winner that we should watch over the next two weeks (starting next Monday). There are no specific rules, but of course, everyone has the common sense not to suggest something like Million Dollar Baby, Chicago or Titanic. Ideally it should be a movie that not many of us havent seen. Of course, some members here will have seen the film, but you can't please everyone.

I want five suggestions by tomorrow. Following club members can't make a suggestion this time because they already did it last time: yoshue, Dr. Lecter, xiayun, Shack and andaroo. All other 15 members of the club can make their suggestions. The first five suggestions will go into a poll in this very thread that will run until Sunday. The winner of the poll will be watched over the following two weeks.

Just reemmber, your suggestion should be a Best Picture Winner, not just a nominee. I suggest to use the IMDB to check for winners.

Since I don't have a computer at home at the moment, I won't be able to get here until tomorrow or even Wednesday to answer any questions. I hope I made the idea clear enough, thouh :)

Have fun picking, guys!

Why just winners this time? The format?

Anyway, I suggest Amadeus, as new as it is. I'm not familiar enough with anything pre~70 to make a good suggestion.

Because I decided to try out different strategies each round. Last week, I tried my suggestion, this week one of xiayun's. Next week, we'll try something else :)

I'm all for trying that out, I just thought it was a nominees club.... having only winners to pick from seems strange. Really, though, I'm fine with this. We still have over 70 choices.

It is a nominees club, but each winner was a nominee too before it won ;)

No worries, next round we are picking from a broader range again :)

I'm not in for suggesting this time obviously, but I hope Out of Africa gets at least a nom. Looking at the other thread, nobody has seen it. It's easily the least watched out of them all.

I'll recommend West Side Story. Mainly because I just got it from Netflix the other day so I'm all ready to watch it ;)

and yeah I plan on catching Dangerous Liaisons tonight finally.

I've seen West Side Story and Amadeus (both which were very good, btw) so may I suggest Lawrence Of Arabia? It's been on my list to see forever, but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Great choices so far. This may force me to buy the whatever-many-year anniversary edition that I always have liked to do.

I'm not actually in the club, but I would very, very, very highly recommend The Apartment.

I think The Apartment is a good pick.

I'm against Lawrence of Arabia only because I've seen it, and I'm honestly not a huge fan. I'd still probably discuss some, though.

In the Heat of the Night seems like it could be good.

But I assume a lot of people have seen it.

You're right, Zing; In The Heat of the Night is a rather good movie, and I'd be surprised if a large percentage of the club has seen it.

It doesn't compare to The Apartment, though, which is arguably the greatest mix of comedy, pathos and satire that Hollywood has ever produced.

The Apartment sounds great, too. If anything, change my recommendation (if the 5th spot is taken before someone else nominates it)

Then again, there is always next time. Either way. I've just been itching to see Amadeus.

Its excellent. I'd say check it out. Meh, the nominees are actually much more interesting. :-)

This I agree with. Often, the winners seem to be the "safest bets". The most challenging or interesting films hardly ever win, imo.

Um...

Nominated. I nominate thee!

(Remember that episode of Arrested Development where Lindsay has to punish Maeby, and she's like, "Um, you're punished. I punish thee!" No? K.)

I could go for that, too. Haven't seen it.

It appears we have the five nominees! And I predict that, given the running times, there is no way Ben Hur or Lawrence are going to win this thing.
