Oh come on now, that's a stretch, and I'm the person who helped start/suggest this club.

I don't think it is actually. Someone from Media Ventures had to get the credit, but they always work collaboratively, and clearly Zimmer played a major role.

No no, I'm talking about the fact that she included the composer as a factor in the box-office. I mean, I'm a pretty hardcore fan of movie scores, but that's just ridiculous. That would never ever in a illion years affect the outcome of this movie by more than a few dollars.

So Sorry.. Thumbs down on 500, from what I've learned here...
More swordplay--- sorry, the pirate attack underwater was way cooler than multiply the swords...
More intense relationships--- so sorry, eccentric characers and post-modern Elizabeth Schwann are defined by their individuality... General Hospital wasn't needed.. Quite the opposite....

I'm not saying that the music has an effect on the box-office. I was just trying to make the point that everyone who worked on the movie the first time is back again, including the composer(s). The music DOES make the movie in terms of entertainment, so having the same composer(s) will keep the soundtrack sounding like the first movie and therefore keep it familiar. It may not factor into box-office, but it does factor into keeping things smoothly flowing from the first film, and that therefore aids the sequel's feel.

To gardenia: when I say swordplay, it doesn't just mean swords; you should see some of the weapons Davey Jones' army carries! There may not be an attack underwater, but I think the Flying Dutchman and its crew will definitely make up for that.

I didn't say "relationships", I said "interactions". There's a difference. I'm not talking soap opera here. I'm talking characterization and how characters interact with other characters, and believe me, if you thought Liz was an individual beforehand, you'll LOVE what goes on with her in the sequel!

This movie will be lucky to make $300m. let alone $500m.

BJ still rocks though.

If it were the $400M club I'd think about it, then probably say no to $400M too. I predict that there will be a nice BO war between PotC 2 and one of the LotR movies. Which LotR movie will depend on the script.

Hope that Orlando Bloom has learned a few line-delivery techniques since then.

I wasn't referring to box office -- I meant quality. You have the exact same crew back making a sequel to a feel-good "adventure" flick. Hopefully POTC2 avoids Future II's pitfalls, like trying to bring back every single character.

I do actually think that the score tends to make more of a difference for WOM then people often think. I just think of all the WOM hits Media Ventures has been involved in: POTC, Gladiator, The Last Samurai, Shrek, National Treasure, Man on Fire, and just last year, Batman Begins and Narnia.

Still, POTC 2 depends entirely on it's opening, and WOM won't matter that much at the BO. POTC 2's real effect will be on POTC 3.

They're not; two of the most fun characters--the bumbling Navy officers Murtogg and Mullroy--won't be back. Most of Barbossa's crew won't be back. Barbossa himself won't be back 'til the very end. AnaMaria (someone a lot of fanfic writers like to pair with Jack) won't be back.

And there are a lot of new characters, a new villain (or, really, villain*s*), and new locations.

Seeing the track record of the Two T's--Shrek/Shrek 2, Mask of Zorro, National Treasure, PotC:CotBP, etc.--I have no doubts that they'll deliver. (plus there's the fact that I know most of the plot already thanks to my being a spoilerhound, even though I'd promised myself I wouldn't--it's just too hard to avoid! lol)

I agree that PotC 2 is more like BttF 2 than Shrek 2. Shrek 2 is animated, for one thing, which is a whole other game. Both Pirates and Back to the Future were adventure comedies, released in the summer, that had excellent word of mouth and great re-watchability, and spawned sequels that were filmed at the same time and included a cliffhanger ending (supposedly). Pirates did better than BttF because of it not being sci-fi (which turns some people off), so the sequels will also do better, but I don't see a Shrek 2-esque breakout. BttF 2 was also really bad in comparison to the first film, something that Pirates 2 hopefully won't be. The opening will be huge, but $500 million is not going to happen. I'm thinking about 120/360.

Is this a bad time to mention that I hated National Treasure? (Loved Zorro and Shrek, though). And I thought they didn't have anything to do with Shrek 2. I know they have an honorary "consultants" credit, but to my knowledge they were offered the writing gig and turned it down because Disney wanted to continue with the fairy tale parodies.

Naw, it's okay, since I've actually not seen National Treasure yet. I mention it, though, because it did well at the box-office and most of the people I've encountered who've seen it liked it. As for Shrek 2, I'm not entirely sure; I'm pretty sure they gave creative consultation, which while not being as influential as being part of the writing team, I'm sure it plays at least a *small* part in how the movie turns out... I'm really not sure on it...

Oh, and don't forget Aladdin! They helped with that one, too (I'm not entirely sure exactly how much; it's difficult to ascertain participation going from IMDb credit pages...).

Yeah, I shouldn't forget Aladdin. I adore that film, and as far as I know they're the sole writers.

I'll go with high 200s, maybe low 300s but it won't be anywhere near 500 let alone 400. Be realistic.
