Da Vinci Code Hits Worldwide May 19, 2006

Columbia Pictures has confirmed that Tom Hanks has been cast in the lead role of the famed symbologist Robert Langdon in the studio's upcoming film adaptation of Dan Brown's best-selling thriller The Da Vinci Code, it was announced today by Sony Pictures Entertainment Motion Picture Group Chairman Amy Pascal and the film's producers Brian Grazer and John Calley. The studio also announced that it has slated May 19, 2006 as the worldwide day and date release for the highly anticipated film.

The Da Vinci Code will be directed by Ron Howard from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, both of whom, along with Grazer, took home Oscars for the drama A Beautiful Mind. Production will begin next year in the United States and Europe.
The Da Vinci Code has been on nationwide best seller lists virtually non-stop since it was released by Doubleday in 2003, including 87 weeks at the top of the NY Times Bestseller list. Over 20 million copies of the novel are in print worldwide and the book has been translated into 42 different languages.

"Tom Hanks is one of the biggest stars in the world today," said Calley, "He has all the intelligence, wry sophistication, everyman charm and talent required to bring this role to life and it's hard to imagine a more perfect fit for the character of Robert Langdon, who Dan Brown created with such compelling care in his bestseller, 'The Da Vinci Code'."

Hm. The film will probaly be good, I never imagined Tom Hanks for the role but he'll probaly do a great job as always. The book was great so I'm anticipating this.

Tom Hanks is an okay choice. I could have thought of better choices though. I've not actually read The Da Vinci Code, but I'm familiar with the character of Robert Langdon from the prequel, Angels & Demons.

I wonder who the rest of the cast is, nobody but hanks listed on imdb.

Yeah, I'm quite interested in seeing who will play Teabing/Sophie. I'm guessing it won't be anyone big.

This will movie will be a box office hit. (280m+) Because for the past three years movies opening on the that weekend have made over 280m. Over the Hedge will most likely switch release dates to the 12th or th 26th to avoid the DaVinci Code.

Some producer in Hollywood is on the phone now going "Get me a Diana Kruger type for Sophie! And get me a David McCallum type for Teabing! Stat!"

Diane Kruger would be all wrong for Sophie. Ten years ago, Bellucci would have been perfect. (She's fluent in French, but of course.)

Jean Reno might be good as Fache (sp?)

Teabing is supposed to be a slightly old british man with an academic bent. David McCallum plays that every week on NCIS (tuesdays at 8 est). I just mean someone like that, he'd do a good job but I'm sure there are others.

Reno 10 years ago might have been good for Fache but he's a little too old for the part now.

I agree Kruger isn't right for Sophie on the face of it but I figure she's a decent actress and is European and can play the part. Belluci 10 years ago would be great yes, as would Sophie Marceau 10 years ago, even better.

Could be? It is one of the most widely read books ever, with over 17 million copies in print. It will easily be one of the biggest movies of 2006, if not the biggest.

Very well, Mr. K. Let's go waaaaay out on a limb here and assume you are correct - that the book IS "mediocre." Then just imagine how fantastically successful YOU would be as an author if you sat down and wrote something that was actually GREAT :?

Then you could sell the movie rights for vast sums of money and retire to some island in the South Pacific where you would be waited on (day and night) by scantily-clad native girls.

In America, we reward people who have misled the country and part of the world with four more years as president.

So rewarding mediocre and marginal art is a bit of a step up for us


The public doesn't, on the whole, like great works. You will not see Ulysses on the stack of paperbacks at the local supermarket next to Passion and Lust of the Crimson Rose with Fabio on the cover ready to sweep middle aged white housewives into a world of waving penises, thrusting masturbation and endless orgasm.

Great musicisians, painters, writers, etc. starve while people (for example) lap up the next Britney Spears single like there is no tomorrow.

I don't write books and I don't pretend to do it well.

I do read them, and as a reader, I am entitled to my own opinion.

They should put that quote on our coins, it might as well be the slogan of any free market system.

To tell you the truth, I liked the book... but I've been into this stuff for a while now, so I don't feel obligated to defend Dan Brown... or even the author of Celestine Prophecy for that matter.

As the great champion of the free market, you'd be the first to say that IF your product is in demand (= desired by the public) then you are entitled to all that cash... and then some. There's an ass for every seat, eh?

BTW: I agree with Archie and andaroo... and totally disagree with you, as always.

I think they should cast Julie Delpy as Sophie. My two cents.
