We're keeping those three categories.
Now:
xiayun wrote: Editing and Visual Effects are quite different. I can see the logic behind grouping Sound and Visual Effects together since most special-effect driven films are loud. Sound individually can give a film like Walk the Line and Memoirs a chance, but Soundtrack and Scores kind of takes care of that.
So I support grouping Sound and Visual Effects together.
I'd leave Cinematography as its own category. That's more about scenary and more on the grand/epic side, while Costume and Makeup is more about cloths and more on the personal side. I'd group Art Direction and Costume together, and leave Makeup as its own since that gives horror movies more of a chance. It should also prevent what happened to Collateral last year, which should have won Cinematography instead of Art Direction. Putting Costume along side with Art Direction will stress the difference between them and Cinematography.
You guys? Do you think it's necessary to have Editing, Visual Effects, Sound, Costume Design, Makeup, Art Direction, and Cinematography? Or would you all prefer to shorten them into a couple categories - like, as xiayun mentions, putting Art Direction and Costume Design together, keeping cinematography, makeup, and editing as individual categories, and combining Sound and Visual Effects?

I think you should put Art/Costume/Makeup together (you could call it "Best Designed Film" or something), keep Editing and Cinematography as aseperate categories, and combine Sound/Visual Effects.
I mean, that's just what I think.

I don't get why people want to combine art direction and costume. I mean there two diffrent catagories!

I think most people can distinsguis between the different categories and i personally like them separate!
The only reason to change them is because unfortunately , people probably just don't care about the categories that much.
Still say keep them the same though

So far, we've got:
1. Overlooked Film after Nomination Round
2. Academy-style Voting
3. Keeping the Fun categories
4. Cotton as host
5. Adding Best Documentary as a category
6. Korrgan as Best Horror presenter
FOR combining some categories: torrino, Christian (?) xiayun, Libs, Zingaling, Kypade (to an extent),
AGAINST combining some technical categories: Dr. Lecter, MikeQ., Rod, Impact
Other things to discuss:
Deadline
Best Song - Needed or Not?
Good job, guys.

I think the deadline should be at the end of February or the beginning of March. If you don't want Oscar influence, have the deadline be at least a day or two before the Oscars.
I would normally say yes to Best Song, but this year has been so light on songs in films that I can't even think of what I'd nominate. See what other people think, I guess.

That'll be a little late, I think, because it will push the winner ceremony to pretty late since we'll need a couple of weeks to vote for the winners. Oscar kind of signals the end of the previous year for me, so I'd like to see us get at least the winner votes done before then.

Oh, yeah, I didn't think of that, I guess I was thinking more "deadline to vote for winners."
Maybe the deadline for nominees could be early-to-mid February, around Valentine's Day maybe.

I think Valentine's Day is perfect, actually.
March 8th or something for the award ballots?

I think you should combine Costume and Makeup, but leave Art Direction since the former two have more to do with the actors themselves than the later.
And I think we should keep Best Song.

I don't mind keeping Best Song, but frankly, I think that's the only category I'll leave blank.
Nothing stood out this year.

Okay, so Cotton's out for host.
Anyone interested? Make a note in this thread or PM loyal, Zingaling, Lecter, or me.

Do NOT combine categories. They are separate for a reason!

If you need more fun categories: best performance in a bad movie. Too often good performances get overlooked cause the movie itself blows. And a thinks he's a star but just isn't award. Also known as the Vin Diesel prize (or whatver name you want to give it). Just tossing them out there into the mix for consideration.
No need for best song. However best sound track or best score might be good.

I agree with Rod, Impact and Zach, keep the tech categories separate. There IS a difference between Cinematography, Editing, Make-Up and Costumes.

Sorry about the hosting thing, but I really don't think I'd be able to pull off such a long event with my shity dial-up connection. I'll throw my upmost support behind whoever decides to do it and I'll try and help out as much as I can if anyone wants me to.
As for the categories, I'd say keep them seperate. It gives us an opportunity to award a wider range of films and areas of achievement. People who don't no the difference between make-up and costumes need not vote in the categories.

If we keep all the categories seperate (which I guess would make more sense), we should put a description up defining each category so there's no confusion like last year.

Think we should have 3 or 5 noms for visual effects?

Lead/Support questions:
1. Maria Bello in A History of Violence? (my choice: supporting)
2. Toni Collette and Cameron Diaz in In Her Shoes? (my choice: lead for both)
3. Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney in The Squid and the Whale? (my choice: supporting for both)
4. Jake Gyllenhaal in Brokeback Mountain? (my choice: supporting)

Jeff Daniels and Laura Linney: Lead for both
Jake Gyllenhall: Supporting

Visual Effects includes sound effects as well.
