Post The Best and Worst of 2005
I'll do my list of favorite and least favorite TV shows, then you do yours. I might add others later, like favorite episodes, favorite characters, etc. Here goes...

10. Family Guy - Despite 17 or so all-new episodes and a straight-to-DVD movie, "Family Guy" returned in a time where there are quite a few solid shows on TV, while 1999-2002 seemed to be a time where I was only interested in "The X-Files", "Family Guy", "Futurama" and "Survivor". Now, the show isn't so high on my list, but it's still a favorite. And if you haven't seen the movie, do yourself a favor and see it.

9. My Name is Earl - This is the show I fully expect to move up the list quite quickly. The first ten episodes have been great, but it has yet to become a MUST-watch series, thanks to a rather blah timeslot. If Earl and The Office can breathe new life into NBC Thursdays, you can be sure I'll be skipping "CSI" in favor of the best hour of comedy on TV.

8. American Dad! - I don't know what it is, but there's something about the dialogue that makes me laugh every episode. It could be the jokes, it could be the delivery of the characters, or it could just be the over-the-top action sequences seen in nearly every episode, but I've really grown attached to this show. I don't hear as much about it as "Family Guy", which can only mean it's basically riding on Family Guy's coattails, but I wouldn't be surprised if it gained popularity in a year or two.

7. Alias - Sorry Michael, I know it's not higher on my list. Season 4 was great, and Season 5 is shaping up to be a solid closer to the spy series that never caught on, but much like the situation with "Family Guy", there are so many great shows on right now that I find it tough to move it any higher on the list. I'll continue my eyes on Rachel Nichols, as she has a fairly good shot at breaking out and being big very soon.

6. Arrested Development - The second funniest show currently on television, it's been hurt a bit this year by FOX tossing it all around the schedule on Mondays, airing it one week and avoiding it the next four weeks. Watching the DVDs proves it probably is the funniest show on TV, and definitely one of the funniest shows of all time, but the year has not been kind to AD at all. Showtime... you're our only hope.

5. Prison Break - It may be farfetched, but what shows aren't farfetched? I have an easier time believing these guys could break out of prison than I could believing that Leah Remini would marry Kevin James. Plus, it boasts some of the coolest characters on TV today, including Abruzzi (takes a sharp lickin', keeps on tickin'), T-Bag, and of course, Michael Scofield. The show may overstay its welcome after one season, but for now, this show is thrilling and innovative.

4. The Office - Season 1 started off with a rather slow pilot, that basically took the UK version, American-ized it, and went with that. I thought it was mediocre at best, and they should have re-wrote the pilot as an original episode, with the basic plot formula used from the UK version. That aside, the show has only gotten better, with a great lead performance by Steve Carell, and enjoyable supporting characters played by John Krasinski, Rainn Wilson, BJ Novak, and especially Jenna Fischer. Long live The Office!

3. Veronica Mars - A perfect blend of drama, comedy, mystery, emotion and suspense (watch the Season 1 finale for a good dose of all five). Veronica is one of my favorite characters on TV right now, and that's thanks largely to Kristen Bell. The entire cast is great, with the only real exception being Duncan, but since most shows aimed primarily at teens feature a cast full of Duncans, I won't make a fuss about him. Season 2 hasn't lost the charm of the rookie season, and I can only hope more people watch.

2. Lost - Very few shows make such an impact in their pilot, but "Lost"'s pilot was near-flawless. From the opening moments, I was hooked, and I haven't lost interest yet. Despite the addition of four new characters, including the worst character currently on television, the show is still a force to reckon with. There isn't much more to say! The "Lost" thread is the most popular thread in the TV section now, so I know you all know that the show rocks.

1. 24 - After Season 3 slowed the series down a bit, Season 4 was immediately kicked into warp speed when the first four episodes premiered over the course of two nights on FOX. The season's excitement rarely died down, from Jack kicking all kinds of ass, Tony saving the day, Michelle taking over CTU, Behrooz and Dina escaping their terrorist father, and Chloe proving her worth by blowing some bullet holes into an unsuspecting bad guy. 24 still rocks. Season 5 starts January 15th and 16th!

Honorable Mentions:
-The Colbert Report (Stephen Colbert's spoof-o'-pundits is the most surprising and most welcome nightly series on TV. I've always had a soft spot for The Daily Show, but I find Colbert's dry humor to be perfect for his own show. He's got 'The Word', 'Better Know a District: A 434 part series', and interviews that make the guests uneasy, not really knowing if his oddball questions are for real or not. The Daily Show may have the popularity, but Colbert can't be accused of riding coattails. The Report is the real deal.)
-House (Even though the show still rocks, without Hugh Laurie, I doubt "House" would be so successful.)
-Desperate Housewives (The first season was a primetime soap opera at its finest. The second season stumbled out of the gate, much like "Friends" in its second season, however it has since regained its stepping. Now, if only Hatcher would realize she's NOT the star of the show, I'd be able to rest easier. And, if I may be demanding for a moment... GIVE EVA LONGORIA AN EMMY. She's the best part of the show, comedy-wise.)
-Survivor: Palau (The season ranged from good to bad all year, but for once, it ended with a deserving winner, the most deserving winner since Richard Hatch.)
-Rescue Me (The second season wasn't quite as top-notch as Season 1, but it still beats most of what you'll find on primetime television.)
-Deadwood (These cocksuckers know how to fucking curse and swear like no motherfucking other. And it's a western. Damn fine show.)
-Extras (Given BBC's norm of just 6-episode seasons, "Extras" didn't have a lot of time to get cozy, but it's getting there. Expect Season 2 to show up on my top 10.)
-Big Brother 6 (My guilty pleasure of the summer was also my favorite edition of the series. Long live Kaysar, Janelle and Howie!)

And now, the worst of the worst...
5. Hot Properties - Attractive young blonde? Check. Nicole Sullivan? Check. Big-breasted chick with an accent? Check. Comedy? Goddamn it, I knew there was something missing! I didn't think it was possible for a show to showcase such obnoxious delivery of lines, but this show does it, with Nicole Sullivan being the worst offender. I really thought it was impossible for Nicole to be unfunny, but it's possible. Properties is previously-living, currently-dead proof.

4. Will & Grace - Oh right. Hot Properties is only second to Will & Grace's obnoxious brand of humor. If the show could go ten seconds without reminding us that Jack is gay, it might actually be funny. But you can be guaranteed that all lines from Jack will feature an overly obvious joke about his sexuality. Between that and Megan Mullally's unfunny one-liners, along with Debra Messing's frequent "deer-in-the-headlights" stare, I can't quite imagine what would compell me to once think that Jack and Karen were the true stars of the show.

3. Survivor: Guatemala - From the get-go, the show's lame attempt to reward Stephenie with a second chance was shark-bait, but surprisingly, that wasn't the worst part of Guatemala. An overly boring season forced me to stop watching after a few episodes, and I have not taken the time to watch the rest of the season. Congrats Danni, take a seat next to the black woman from Marquesas, the southern chick from Australia, and that loudmouth from Vanuatu. Don't worry, I'll forget your name too, soon enough.

2. The Amazing Race: Family Edition - Take a perfectly good formula, and add a lame gimmick, and this is the result. Thank God the real show returns in February.

1. According to Jim/Rodney/Yes, Dear/Still Standing/The War at Home/My Wife and Kids/Stacked/Listen Up/Freddie/George Lopez/Love, Inc./Eve/Cuts/UPN Monday Night/Anything with a laugh track - The sitcom is not dead. It's being murdered.

So wait, do we count shows/seasons that started in Sept. 2004, or do we go by just 2005?

How about some favorites?

Favorite Character, Male: Jack Bauer "24" - Kiefer Sutherland kicks ass and takes names, with an angry look that would make me think twice about ever crossing his path. Currently, Jack may be "dead", but soon, he'll become the most wanted man alive. I could only believe one man to save the world every year, and it's Jack Bauer.

Favorite Character, Female: Veronica Mars "Veronica Mars" - Smart, sexy, funny, and... did I say sexy yet? Fine. Hot. What, is that repetition? Ugh. Anyway, Veronica Mars is one of the coolest characters on television, and I could only wish that she was my best friend. Like Jack Bauer's ability to save the day, there's only one person that I could believe is able to solve crimes every week. I heart you, Veronica.

Favorite Episode, Comedy: My Name is Earl's Pilot - There are so many great episodes from "The Office" and "Arrested Development", but I have to go with the pilot for Earl. It still hasn't lost it after five viewings, and it sets the tone for the entire series (Earl rights his wrongs over the course of the show's history) without coming off as forced.

Favorite Episode, Drama: 24's Day Four; Hour 24 - The last episode of Season 4 resolved the season-long plot in the first twenty minutes, leaving the rest of the show to tie up the dilemma of Jack and his crew fucking up in one of the later Season 4 episodes. Jack is dead, in one of the show's finest plot twists. It could have come off as incredibly lame and uncalled for, but rumors of Jack's death for three seasons only made the twist that much better.

Favorite Real Couple: Veronica and Logan, "Veronica Mars" - Who needs Duncan when you can have Logan? Okay, that may make me sound a little gay, but I'm comfortable with my totally heterosexual feelings for Veronica to make such a statement. Hints of sexual tension between Logan and Veronica is strong in Season 2 (where Veronica is currently dating Duncan), and it just makes me giddy like a schoolgirl.

Favorite Almost-Couple: Jim and Pam, "The Office" - Ross and Rachel. Niles and Daphne. Jim and Pam. It fits. And heck, I think they do a better job of it than Ross and Rachel, but they got some work to do before they match Niles and his secret feelings for Frasier's English maid.

Favorite Family: The Bluths, "Arrested Development" - Dysfunctional families never were so hilarious. I'd gladly be a second or third cousin to Michael, George, Lucille, Oscar, GOB, Buster, Tobias, Lindsay, George Michael, or Maeby.

Favorite Moment: (TIE) Chloe kills the bad guy on "24"; Keith really is Veronica's daddy on "Veronica Mars" - Two completely different shows, but these two moments stood out all year. Chloe's moment in the spotlight was incredible, but that emotional scene between Veronica and Keith was warm, touching, and brought a tear to my eye. "Who's your daddy?" never sounded so loving and heart-felt.

Favorite Season Finale: Veronica Mars - I gave the favorite episode to "24", so I'll just give this to Veronica Mars instead. The season-long mystery came to a close, and the mystery never lost its step along the way. Each week, someone else would emerge as the obvious choice, which many would dismiss as a decoy. But, as weeks went on, the decoys ended up becoming prime suspects, thanks to the show's clever writing. When it all came down to it, the show went from a tense season finale, where the killer went after Veronica to regain the evidence that would land them in jail. The whole first season was perfect, and I hope Season 2 can stand tall next to Season 1.

Favorite Theme Songs: Deadwood, Rescue Me, and Veronica Mars - These three songs stand suitable as themes to their respective TV shows, but I can just as easily listen to the songs on their own and enjoy them. Honorable mention to Lost's creepy 10-second opener, that sets the tone for the show. Sometimes, simplicity does work best.

Favorite Cast: Arrested Development - No cast is perfect. All casts have one or two weak links. "Arrested Development" is the one and only exception.

Only shows that air in 2005. If a show ended in 2004 (anything cancelled before Christmas) or didn't air in 2005 (like The Sopranos), it doesn't count.

Here we go:

The Worst:

5. The OC: Oh how the mighty fall. I have never in my life seen a show that has had such a quick turn-around. Basicly all of Season 1 was great, sexy, funny, sarcastic, entertaining. Then Season 2 started, and it instantly lost all factors that made it interesting. All of it. Everything it had, gone in an instant.

4. Alias: Hate Jennifer Garner. Hate how nothing makes sense, and it doesn't follow any of the rules of being realistic. One of the times I watched this, a man got shot and shattered into a bunch of ice particles. Err...

3. War At Home: Wow. What a show. I normally wouldn't be *that* much against something distasteful like this show, but this takes it WAYYYY over the line. I didn't even think a lot of this stuff was allowed on tv, the flat-out racist comments and constant talk of masturbation techniques.

2. Arrested Development: I just don't understand the hype around this show. I've tried watching it, and I couldn't find it funny at all. It just felt awkward, and every joke fell flat. I have to say, as bad as WAH is, I laughed more in that than I did watching this show. Major hate from me in this direction.

1. Amazing Race: Family Edition: The unspeakable one. I don't want to start to talk about this, about how bad it was. They couldn't fuck up a show more if they tried. SO BAD. Thank god for the return to regular seasons coming up.

and now

The Best:

10. Survivor: Palau: I've been with Survivor since the beginning, and I follow it religiously. That being said, while I liked this season, it was far from one of their best.

9. My Name is Earl: One of the best new shows of the season, it's QUICKLY rising up the ranks on my list. I seem to like it more every time I see it.

8. South Park: The old classic, South Park remains one of my faves. The only reason it's not higher on this list is the fact that I get a weird cable package that makes it almost impossible to catch the new episodes on a weekly basis.

7. How I Met Your Mother: It's not Friends yet, but it's certainly getting there. It deserves all the support it can get, because it really is turning into a fantastic show.

6. The Amazing Race 7: With the help of a fantastic cast including of course Rob and Amber, The Amazing Race came out of nowhere and delivered their best season to date.

5. Family Guy: Back, and in high fashion. It's amazing that after a 4 year absence, they could return in a way that looks like they never missed a step.

4. Tru Calling: Poor Tru Calling. It's too bad that it didn't last long, because it's one of the best shows I have ever seen. If only America wasn't so silly....

3. Lost: There isn't much explanation needed here. Season 1 was pure TV orgasm. Season 2 has drooped in quality and entertainment a bit, which takes away takes away it's #2 spot in favour of a #3. Still, one of the top shows on tv.

2. American Idol IV: The best reality-show on tv, it peaks my interest like nothing else. Season 4 wasn't my pure favorite, but I still lovveddd it. It also didn't hurt that my choice from the start, Carrie, won easily.

1. One Tree Hill: As my obsession, One Tree Hill has no problem obtaining it's #1 slot on my list. Armed with my S1 and S2 dvds, my OTH littered desktop, my OTH merchandise(I own books about it!) etc., it works that I'm pretty much the show's biggest fan this side of Canada. While I still prefer S1, there was nothing to sniff about in S2. They brought in the best guest star in the history of television when they introduced Huey Lewis as Haley's father, as well as adding a few new fantastic characters with Chris Keller, Taylor James, Emily/Julie, and Felix. They also introduced some quite original concepts like the Time Capsule episode, and the rehash/dream episode of the beginning of show where everything is backwards dun dun dun. And oh yeah, the 2 hours S2 finale was probably the best work of "teen drama" ever filmed. It was 100% better than most movies this year. S3 also hasn't let me down yet, though it's been a bit up-and-down, with some of the best and worst episodes OTH has ever had alternating throughout. Still, the #1 show slot shouldn't be challenged for a while yet.

Great list MR. X

I don't watch more than half of those, but I do really like your picks.

I have ONE single complaint. I can't see how Rescue Me Season 1 was better than Seson 2. Season 2 of Rescue was among the finest sesons of television I have seen. They kinf lost it in the end, but it was still among the most solid season I have ever seen from any show.

I'd make a list too, except I don't watch enough TV to do so ;)

Oh what the hell...

5. Alias: Season 4 was a roller-coaster ride but it did have its highs. Season 5 seemed promising until I just suddenly stopped watching because of laziness and schoolwork. I can't wait to get my computer up and running so I can downoad all the eps I missed.

4. Grey's Anatomy: A good debut season with a not so promising finale. Then came Season 2. The most consstently GREAT show of the new season. Aside from Meredith, EVERYTHING on this show is pitch perfect and I give them props for at least trying to go the least cliche route with most of their storylines.

3. Rescue Me: It was a REAL horse race between this and my #2 pick. But the #2 pick did have ALOT more episodes and showed signs of revitalizing in the last episodes of the year while Rescue Me ended on a low note compared to the rest of its jaw-droppingly astonishing season. This is what television is all about. I did not know the writers from season 1 had this much heart and insight. BRAVO!!! I am just praying Season 3 doesn't take a Nip/Tuck turn.

2. Desperate Housewives: My #1 show of last season sunk really low with the first third of its second season. It did have a few high moments, but what just barely keeps this at #2 is the fact that the show started becoming promising again in the last episode before the year was out.

1. Lost: Ambitious first season (though Housewives takes the top spot for best of 04-05) and completely mind-blowing opening act for the second season. I don't know why so many are disappointed or in some form thought it has decreased in quality. So far, Season 2 has proved better in quality and focus than Season 1. IT's the season 1 finale they have to live up to, and the building up to it. Can they do it again?

I didn't watch Arrested Development in its secnd season and have cought only a few episodes in the third, so I can't really rate it. And also, I only watched half of Nip/Tuck's third season so... that I can't judge fully yet either.

Favorite character: Bree, Desperate Housewives

Oh and Shack... Granted I haven't seen OTH but I can guarantee you one episode of Once and Again dealing with the kids and teenagers is probably better "teen drama" than the entire series of OTH and most definitely 10 times as real.

Arrested Development's third season thus far has been brilliant. Like, the best it's ever been brilliant.

Six Feet Under's fifth and final season wasn't perfect, but the last couple episodes kind of were. This season of the show should be a showcase for the heights that dramatic television is able to reach.

Even though Scrubs doesn't start till January 3rd (yayyyyy), the second half of its fourth season is enough for me to keep it near the top.

The Office, a show that I didn't really like the first time I saw it, has come into its own, reaching the comedic heights that really only recently AD and Scrubs have reached for me. Naturally, it gets crappy ratings.

The first season of Lost was great, but I found it uneven, as have been the last two or three episodes. When the show is good, though, it's brilliant. Case in point: episodes like the first three of this season.

The Daily Show is The Daily Show.

I didn't find Extras quite as hilarious or sharp as AD, or even The Office (American version), but its first season, albeit annoyingly short, was often brilliant. The show did, after all, give me one of the biggest laughs of any show - probably ever.

Season five of Alias has been kind of blah, but I found season four, especially the last few episodes, to be quite satisfying.

Huff was also occasionally uneven but overall pretty fantastic. Season two starts soon. Any takers?

And ER. Oh, ER. You know, I still think it's one of the best dramas on TV.

"House MD" is so far above all the rest, that's the only one I'm going to submit for Best of 2005.

As for worst... I'll go with just about every reality show out there (except for Airline [awesome, awesome show], which isn't even so much a reality show as it is a documentary type show, if you think about it; no games with scripts there!).

Yeah, I've seen Airline a couple times and actually like it.

Apparently A&E has cancelled it, though.

House is by far my favorite show on television right at this moment.

I dont watch bad shows enough to say they're the "worst." War at Home is pretty damn bad, though.

Here's my top 5

05. Grey's Anatomy
Remember when ER focused more on actual cast members than which guest star they could convince to lapse into a coma that week? Well that's what GA is to me, great hospital drama with just the right amount of comedy, and very interesting characters. Now if only they could get off this whole McDreamy/Meredith thing, then maybe the show could vault up a few spaces.

04. House
Just started watching this show in its second season and I can't get enough. The arrogant, yet hilarious House is becoming my favourite character on television (not there just yet), still not really liking many of the other junior doctors but House more than makes up for them.

03. Battlestar Galactica
The show with the best cliffhanger from last season follows up with the best season premiere. Everything about the two part "Kobol's Last Gleaming" season ender/beginner was perfect, right down to the music. Only thing keeping BSG from the top spot is a fate that I find befalls most SciFi shows, really strong first two or three episodes of the half season, really strong last two or three episodes of the half season, but a middle that isn't that exciting. I also hate the break in the fall, I know it's a trade off with episodes coming in the summer, but to make me wait from Sept-Jan, especially with "Pegasus" for the resolution is just cruel.

01. Gilmore Girls
Yeah, what I think is the funniest hour long show on the air today. Season 6 is shaping up to be better than S2-4, and given the possibilites could even match S1 and 5. Even with its turn towards the more dramatic side this season, it still brings the funny. Normally a show concoting a kid, of an engaged to be married character, that never heard about her and bringing someone from the past for like the fifth time back to "shake things up" would have me losing faith but somehow this one doesn't, and I can't wait to see how things are resolved. Jan 10, get here now.

01. Arrested Development
Analyst/Therapist. That is all.

Just missed the top 5:
24
Veronica Mars

Fallen off the list:
The Amazing Race (Will be back once the real race starts)
Desperate Housewives
Lost
The O.C. (So far off the list I can't even see it anymore)

There's a lot I forgot to mention, or didn't have room to make them higher on my list. Weeds, Six Feet Under, Scrubs, etc.

I just want to name to shows that were great and have just lost it.

OC - Gulity Pleasure, it's first season was great then I completely lost all care for the show, it was just bleh.

Nip Tuck - First two seasons were brilliant, third season just threw all reality out the window and just went a diffrent an idiotic path, the plot holes are just too big and they're just too many and at the end of the day it's just not an interesting show anymore it lost all it's charm, the writers just lost it.
