Narnia hit Moviefone this morning. Currently, it's behind Memoirs of the Geisha on the Yahoo Buzz Chart, surprisingly. It's not very strong on that chart for such an internet hyped film.

Narnia - $60m
Syriana - $18m (Traffic made 16 million 5 years ago, if anyone is interested..but it was in fewer theaters and had a worse PTA on the previous week, so 18 million seems to be the minimum..)

Memoirs is climbing the chart really fast due to the love from Yahoo (posting its picture and news and a new clip on the frontpage in the last couple of days).

Brokeback Mountain has been stable at No. 2 on moviefone since sometime yesterday. Looks like both should have great PTAs this weekend.

Wayyyyy too low on Syriana.

Also, the tracking report from notfabio...:

Quote:
I have no gut feeling on if NARNIA's tracking is of any use at all with the religious fanbase factor.

LAST WEEKEND ACCURACY:
AEON FLUX: RS:11 MTC:8

MAJOR THEATRE CHAIN:
NARNIA: 57 MILLION
SYRIANA: 10 MILLION

REEL SOURCE:
NARNIA: 48 MILLION (-7 MILLION)
SYRIANA 14 MILLION
(they had it a few million (2-3) higher the week before it opened but hasn't been updated since)

FUTURE REEL SOURCE:

KONG(5 DAY): 87 MILLION
(I have a feeling the 78 was a 3 day figure)
FUN WITH DICK AND JANE (5 DAY): 33 MILLION
FAMILY STONE: 13 MILLION
CHEAPER 2 (5 DAY): 37 MILLION
RUMOR HAS IT: 15 MILLION
(no clarification on if that means it can somehow make 15 million in one day or what since it is a Christmas Day release. I've seen it and well....)

Hmmmmm...weird tracking.

The Family Stone seems a tad low-ish. Certainly no amazing news for Syriana and Cheaper by the Dozen 2 is supposed to open bigger than Fun with Dick and Jane?

I knew it! This movie is so plummeting or sky-rocketing. It really depends on how its doing with the church group/repeat viewings. I wouldn't have thought so, but I just noticed from other forum member's response when this movie was first mentioned awhile back that alot of people don't know the book series, or weren't excited by the advertising. So I thought to myself, maybe Narnia isn't as big a book series as i thought it was? However the recruiting they have been doing towards certain groups could be the "new" group that sees the movie despite not having read the books. In essence, they'll fill in the lackluster response for non-book fans that could still be movie fans. It really all depends. I still have a sneaking suspicion this will not be as big as I had first thought, but Disney is an aggressive recruiter, and that's the one element I'm not sure about.

I agree on opening weekend with Igor.

Does the well... refer to your thoughts on its box office or on the movie itself. Did you like it? I am really looking forward to it. The whole premise with Shirley MacLaine and Kevin Costner they got me sucked in with the trailer piss poor reviews or not.

For the two big boys opening this weekend I am going w/$65m for Narnia and $15m for Syriana. I will be more specific when the theater counts are confirmed so I can really F*** up my prediction. I think Monday's number kind of leads to the suspicion that Syriana isn't quite the under the radar blockbuster I thought it was over the weekend. It might not make $10m for the weekend, but who really knows at this point. Narnia I think is incapable of going below $50m and could be in the upper 80s-65m for now.

I just have a gut that everyone is overpredicting the opening, and underpredicting the legs of this film. December is NOT known for big openings, and it has a history of having somewhat subdued openings which people often deem as disappointments, but which are counterbalanced by great legs. Yes, Narnia will be a bigger opening than usual, but this is December afterall.

1752 theaters for Syriana.

I'm actually not sure how Syriana will do now. Its box office number so far has been terrific, but the buzz isn't showing up online. Both Brokeback Mountain and Memoirs of a Geisha are way ahead of it in various buzz-related charts. $20M is definitely out, and even $15M may be a stretch. Nothing suggests it will do much more than $8K PTA this weekend.

But wouldn't it be something if the film did open up in the ballpark range of this number?? Would it be classified as a shock or what??

I am back on the Syriana bandwagon. I thought Monday's number meant something, because it dropped so much in comparison to last Monday's drop 70% compared to last week's 50%. That meant something was wrong, or did it? There was one factor that I thought might have impacted Monday's number, MNF. Was Syriana playing in Philly (Seatle at Philadelphia was the game on MNF). When I read a couple of bloggers from Philly who commented on the movie I thought eureka!! However, I searched the movies playing in Philly for Syriana and found it was not playing there. Then I checked NYC and LA and yes as I assumed it was playing in those cities, but where were the missing theaters? Syriana went up more than any other movie on Tuesday and didn't drop as much as it did last week on Wednesday. The Monday to Monday PTA was almost a 50% drop, but by Wednesday the drop was only 25% (rough approx. percentages). Why was Monday the odd day out? Because Syriana opened in Seattle last weekend. Everybody in Seattle stayed home to watch the game on Monday and then came out Tuesday to see Syriana. That is the reason for the odd pattern so far in the week. So, that is one less reason to think Syriana won't do well this weekend. I think Syrian will have a PTA of around $9,000 and be around $15.75m for the weekend. Could still do under $10m, though.

The moviefone appearance for Kong doesn't mean much since it's not even the week of release, but it's been on the Yahoo Buzz Chart (and holding strong) for weeks, and if not for Potter and X3 (because of the teaser release), it'd be #1, and the score would be almost 3x more than Narnia.

Anyways, Box Office Guru has Narnia at $45 million (using 3000 theaters) and Syriana at $13 million.
