Nah, not the same as Wax. It looks quite interesting, and will certainly break 25 million. For its content, that not bad. It'll sustain trailer release, imo, and continue to have high viewing. mostly because the trailer is being played before certain indie movies, and the indie scene tends to travel by slow wom. So people will hear about the movie only two weeks from now, and still go look it up.

It's quite a good trailer.... I agree that the subject matter makes it's audience quite limited in the beginning, however, if it gets major award nominations (as it might), who knows how far it could go. And, judging by the early reviews, it is very much a romance, not watered down at all. I think woman are going to be strong supporters of this film... so, if the studio plays it's cards right, it could climb as high as 40-50 million...

Queers will want to support this movie too, I'd imagine. Personally I can't wait to see it, but I don't really care about the money it makes. I doubt it'll be much of a hit, but it might make a solid chunk of change. who knows ... I've lost my touch with this 'box office' stuff.

$10 this movie makes me:
or at least makes me teary eyed

"Looks like director Ang Lee has regained his footing since The Hulk. The oldest film festival in the world is underway, and already the buzz over his film Brokeback Mountain has eclipsed all others at the Venice International Film Festival, which runs through this week. Brokeback Mountain, starring Heath Ledger (+69%) and Jake Gyllenhaal (+99%), is being described as the first homosexual cowboy movie. Well, at least, the first overtly gay film about guys who hang out together wearing chaps. Searches on the hotly anticipated flick are up 192% over the last week, and we've seen a corresponding spike in "brokeback mountain trailer," up 356%. Two-thirds of Brokeback searches are from males intrigued by the cowboy tale, which is based on a story by E. Annie Proulx. "

Despite all this, $25M would be absolutely fantastic.

"Brokeback mountain" just won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival... that could only raise its "Art-house" profile even more.

This move kinda remind me of The Hours.

Great reviews released during awards season and will likely pick up many of those awards...but obviously not a film for everybody.

Despite that I think it will perform slightly (at least) better than The Hours. Which for a movie like this is excellent.

I really doubt it will perform better than The Hours. I mean... the Hours had an amazing cast and great trailer and alot of buzz and it still managed to gross sub $50m (I believe).

The Hours did alienate alot of the male crowd because it was seen as some women-obsessed feminist film. But you know what Brokeback Mountain will probably lose that same amount of male demographic due to, well obvious reasons!

The Hours did as much as it could for such a depressing movie with its award buzz and stellar cast, and I believe the same thing will happen to Brokeback Mountain. It will set the box office limit for how much a film with homosexual subject matter can gross.

Didn't Philadelphia do like 70+ million?

Brokeback Mountain looks good, but won't make a lot due to its rating, subject material, and that fact it will be a limited release.

Yeah, but it was more of an AIDS issue which is not exclusively a homosexual one. This movie focuses on homosexuality (or repression of it, that is).

Now it's not so much the trailer, but the most recent win in Venice. : ) How else can you explain that it is above Goblet of Fire?

It was in the top five on the Yahoo list before the Venice win was announced.

Well, it has received raves from Venice by that time already al over the net. I think pretty much the majority had it pegged for a Venice win before it was announced. Also, the trailer is really not that old yet.

I really think this movie can breakout big time, especially with all this postive feedback the movie is getting. Im thinking the subject matter wont be limited at all, especially if it gets enough exposure, which it will thanks to the subject matter. People will be curious ( heh ) to check it out, as of right now this might be the movie to beat come oscars ( maybe eventually Jarhead or Munich will take that title ).

If it gets oscar buzz and gets a wide enough release it'll do atleast 50m. Wont open with anything special, but will have some fantastic holds week to week until the Academy Awards.

Actually I read in the paper today that they were expecting Clooney's Good Night, and Good Luck to take the top prize (along with the writing and actor wins) but Mountain surprised!

He makes a good point, Lecter. Good Night, and Good Luck had just as much buzz from the festival - and a brand spanking new trailer to boot - yet didn't even manage to break Yahoo's top twenty most visited previews.

That's weird because every single article leading up to the prize praised Brokeback Mountain and put it as a frontrunner once it was screened.

What articles?

I too, remember Good night, and Good Luck, being mentioned as the favorite to win before the actual winner was announced.

And there is interest in the movie stop denying it :P

How wide of a release will it get is the big question as far as box office prospects go. it's not gonna make $70 million on 100 thaters.

but assuming it, again, gets a the hours like release where it starts in limited release in december, then semi wide by january, i still see it performing slightly better than the hours, around $50-70 million. assuming the buzz it has right now stays as strong in the upcoming months, of course. don't count it out for the best picture win though, which would change everything.

With the fast-growing oscar buzz and a recent big article in Newsweek, I think now is a good time to bump this. The overall awareness buzz is growing at an alarming rate. Could it end up being the Gay Man's Passion?!

Nah.

But still, big buzz.

They're also not shying away from the subject matter. THe poster depicts the two actors almost neck and neck, and the preview is pretty true to form as well. It should definitely be interesting to see if audiences warm up to it.
