Could be, but I think they are both asserting themselves as equal frontrunners. http://www.moviecitynews.com/reviews/walktheline.htmlFrom David Poland... Quote: Both Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon do their own singing and it is really pretty astounding. Phoenix offers the range, sometimes bordering on ?is that bad?? to absolutely undeniable, that Cash seemed to have himself. And Witherspoon could have a recording career in country tomorrow. She does the country twang and sang expertly. And when this duo is on screen together, it is true movie magic. Quote: But it is when Reese & Joaqin share the screen that the pinball machine goes wild. Every scene of them on stage is, really, like watching them have sex. There is an instant intimacy to watching these two people who effortlessly find the perfect rhythm together... for about three minutes. (These are the jokes, folks!) Quote: There are some great directorial moments and ideas that clearly built the pillows on which these two Oscar-nominated-to-be performances by two of our best young actors are supported. Having seen the film three times now ? and looking forward to a fourth ? some of the great detail work bubbles to the surface. This film is a serious crowd pleaser. Quote: Joaquin Phoenix?s power in this role grows with every viewing. He is meticulously powerful. There is a scene in which he comes out of a drugged daze and his eyes appear to have literally changed color. It is a very internal role. He is a man of few words. But he holds himself as firmly as a 100-year-old oak and can quickly become as soft as a smored marshmallow. His singing as Cash is like a second performance on its own. He daringly gets better and better at being the Johnny Cash we know. His physicality is often remarkable... watch how he works his shoulders while onstage. But most of all, you can see every joy and pain in those eyes. Quote: Reese Witherspoon restates her hold on the position as America?s top movie actress. She allows herself to serve Phoenix?s performance without any show of ego. Thing about the last time you saw a movie with a $20 million actress who didn?t find a way to get a big showy scene of her own. Witherspoon is great in the film, but she is a reactor, even in action. And oh what a reaction. Witherspoon is a wonder in so many ways. A true superstar who has managed to have a family and a career while staying out of the tabloids and making choices that are sometimes very commercial, but just as often, deeply challenging.

If Witherspoon does get a nomination, it will be about time. She deserved one for Election six years ago.

If she gets a nomination? If? pfft! Some fan you are.
It's a lock!
She's probably going to win, too. I'll have to see what Charlize has to offer in North Country, but she's already won, and Cameron Diaz is playing a woman with severe dyslexia in In Her Shoes, and that could go over big, and Michelle Yeoh might get some votes for Memoirs of a Geisha , but none of them are America's Sweetheart like Reese is, and I would expect that she is one great performance away from an Oscar victory.

Michelle Yeoh is supporting in Geisha. I think Reese's only competition in Best Actress race is Felicity Huffman.

Yeah, forgot about Felicity, who very well could be Reese's biggest competition for playing a former man. I also think there are a few surprises on the way.

Here are Roger Ebert's comments.

"Walk the Line" stars Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon as the man in black and his wife, June Carter Cash. A review can await the film's opening, but let me observe that at one point, during a musical number, I closed my eyes to focus entirely on the music. As someone who knows Cash's music virtually by heart, I was convinced the movie was dubbed: That was Johnny Cash's real voice, just as "Ray" used the original Ray Charles recordings.
At the end of the movie, watching the credits, I was thunderstruck to discover that Phoenix had performed all of Cash's vocals. It was more than just a good impersonation; he nailed them. Witherspoon does her own vocals, too, confirming (as Kevin Spacey did last year with "Beyond the Sea") that gifted actors are sometimes also gifted singers; it's just that we don't know it. If this were an era of movie musicals, these would be singing as well as acting stars. And now that every pop singer since 1940 seems to have a biopic in the wings, that era may be returning indirectly.
It's pretty bad that a reknown fil critic like Ebert didn't know that Phoenix sang his own vocals, yet we've known for months.
I must say, I'm very interested in hearing Witherspoon sing. Female singers turn me on.

I just got done watching Reese Witherspoon on David Letterman. Before they went to break, he said they'd be right back to talk about Just Like Heaven. When the music started taking the show to the commercials, Dave said "Man, I REALLY liked that Johnny Cash movie". As soon as they came back from break, that's what Dave wanted to talk about. He praised the film and their performances. Reese said she really couldn't sing before they started training for 6 months, and neither could Phoenix. (the very thing that's going to net both of them the Oscar gold) Dave was highly impressed.
They went on to talk about Just Like Heaven briefly, and show the clip, and Reese said it was one of her favorite movies she's ever done. Dave immediately asked her how she ranked it with "that Johnny Cash movie", and she said it's definitely up there, and he asked if there was any way that they could release that one of Friday instead, because "it was strong".
Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, and Best Actress noms are locks, and it might even win them all. It's definitely going to take the acting awards, mark my words.

I wish I was home to catch Letterman. It sounds like it was a good interview. Sounds like Dave was drooling over the film.
Anyway, I saw Walk The Line at the premiere in Toronto and it's utterly brilliant. Phoenix and Witherspoon are phenomenal and both produce performances that should catch the Acamedy's eye. Their singing is also fantastic. You'll really be surprised at how good they are, considering that neither are singers.
I don't follow Phoenix's career much, so I have no idea how this performance ranks for him, but this is by far Reese's best performance. She also looks really great as a brunette, so that's a bonus.

Phoenix has always been a decent actor, he was really really good as the villian in Gladiator. This looks like his best though.
