Jack Sparrow you're right about a new thread. ^^

I would be fine with this.

Cinemania isn't the place for it though. The Water Cooler makes the most sense, but I don't think many of our members, the newer ones, especially those that participate and visit this thread in particular, really go there.

I'd suggest a subforum for here (Box Office Bash), so that it's easily accessible for those that will be reading and posting in it. It's not box office related exactly though. Another possibility is reviving the Literature forum that was moved to the archives a couple years ago. but doing that for a single specific thread for Manga sales and such perhaps doesn't make much sense either.

I'd like the newer members to weigh in on what they'd like to see, such as the location for the thread, since they'll be the ones mostly using it. I don't think they, or myself, would want it somewhere they'd not visit otherwise.

Indeed I was also skeptical on creating a new thread to a place where people would not visit. I thought about it last night and we might have to come up with some transition plan like maintaining the lists in the other thread but still keeping a few discussions here but yeah let others weigh in on this. I do not want to rush the transition.

Volume 0 doesn't count for the main series. It is a separate thing just like Kimetsu Gaiden and such.

With this week's numbers, we currently have, after 9 weeks:

Demon Slayer at #1 with 18,807,952 copies sold
Jujutsu Kaisen at #2 with 7,558,916 copies sold

It will be interesting to see who'll be the number one this year. Both of these series are most likely going to sell over 40M copies this year (I'm expecting Kimetsu to sell around 40M copies this year, and Jujutsu has the potential to sell even more than 40M... If I had to bet, right now, I'd bet on Jujutsu to be the highest selling manga of the year. I can see the series having the edge over Kimetsu because of the ceiling of sales it has yet to reach.)

It'll no doubt top the 2021 Oricon Year, and could end up selling 35, 40 million or even more (it's very early in the year) for the year alone. We'll need to see how it performs after season one of the anime concludes.

The series could very well reach 50/60 million copies in circulation by the end of 2021, just 3.5 years after debuting.

I wouldn't say with no doubt, but I'm also starting to believe that Jujutsu will be the best selling manga this year.

Given the fact that the series is still growing (and it still has a LOT to grow) but it has already sold over 7.5M copies in just 9 weeks, I'm also thinking about at least 40M copies for this year, with room to even more...

50M copies in circulation by the end of the year is already a given. 60M is most likely going to happen.

At the of november 2020 I was expected KnY reaching 30-35M and be first ranked for 2021. But now I dunno... How long KnY and JjK will sell that crazy ? Is KnY able to reach a 7M per volume ? Will JjK reach 3M then...? It's already doing nice and we can expect a 2M easily.
Of course I'm talking about sold copies and not circulation.

I want to give my two cents on this manga dicussion:

Spoiler: show
First, I think the data we have supports the fact that no One Piece volume has ever sold over 4 million copies during the oricon era (that is, 2008 to present). Iscariot is right here. I can't be 100% sure of that since as you said, it was never reported anyway but here's what we know:

As of January 2014, One Piece volume 61 was the best selling One Piece volume (and obviously, the best selling manga volume overall) in Oricon history at that time. This was reported in an article when Eternal Zero's book became the best selling book in Japan with 3.765million units, surpassing OP #61's 3.718 million.

https://www.oricon.co.jp/news/2033249/full/

Thanks to this information, we know what OP#61 had sold by then ( the week ending January 19, 2014). And we also know from the 2011 rankings that that volume had sold 3.382 million units as of November 20,2011. So in a little over two years, it added approximately 336k units. During that same time, the average sales of backlog volumes (that is, all volumes besides the ones released in a given year) was ~316k units. So #61 sold slightly more than the average which makes sense because it was a recent volume at that time. However as time passes, the older volumes tend to fall behind the average (since newer volumes which aren't done selling are going to dominate backlog sales). Now here's what the average backlog sales were from 2014 to 2020:

2014: 46k
2015: 28k
2016: 23k
2017: 19k
2018: 16k
2019: 17k
2020: 21k

Total: 170k

So even if we are very generous and assume that OP#61 managed to keep with the average all the way through (which is already unlikely as I explained above), we still only end stop at 3.888 million which is still too far from 4 million. It would need to have beaten the average by 66% to reachthe 282k needed to reach 4 million and that is pretty much impossible.

I have the suspicion that the reason Oricon didn't report that KnY as the first to break 4 million is because they report these records for books and manga jointly (as they did in that article) and kimetsu is not the first 4 million book seller in the Oricon era as Eternal Zero did it first if I remember correctly.

Now as to whether there was ever a time when every One Piece volume was above 3 million, I don't think so. But this is only because of the first two volumes of 2008 (49 and 50) which were released at a time when oricon wasn't very accurate. If we only count volumes released since 2009, then there was a brief moment in 2012 just before the release of volume 68 when all the volumes had sold over 3 million units.

Obviously, this is only during the oricon era (2008-Present). Prior to that, I'm sure a lot of the earlier volumes sold over 4 million units and perhaps the first one has even sold over 5 after nearly 24 years now but we don't have the data.

There's definitely enough interest to have a Manga thread where weekly data can be posted, in addition to all the discussion (stats, sales, etc.) that's been had over the past several weeks.

Where would you guys like me to open it? There's not really any ideal location besides in The Water Cooler, but would you all be willing to post there? Or would you prefer it to be a subforum for Box Office Bash? I'm in favor of the latter. It's not box office related of course, but it's going to be closely tied to this particular thread, and a subforum won't get in the way of any of the threads here.

Let me know soonish and I can open it tomorrow.

Hey Corpse let me figure out a way of sub-forum or maybe even a sub-thread (possibility) will circle back on this soon.

Also DS has really stabilized now the weekdays are pretty big considering what it is making over weekends.

No problem. A sub-thread would be very cool, but I don't think it's an option--at least I've never seen one on here before.

And yes, the weekdays have been incredibly strong for Demon Slayer, as well as pretty much everything else, for the past two weeks now.

Yes a sub-thread is not possible in phpBB. Let me create a sub-forum. You can create the topics inside it going forward.

Its done! "Comics and Manga Discussion" which is sub-forum of Box Office Bash is created. You can see it under the Box Office Bash Forum in the Board Index Page. We might house it to a different forum in future.

Doraemon 2021 delayed.
https://natalie.mu/comic/news/414256

Would kinda hurt for this year to have Conan delayed yet again, hopefully it doesn't have to come to that.

Very surprising that Doraemon was delayed this soon. I thought the COVID situation is getting better this week in Japan. Is it delayed for a whole year or just undecide when to release this year?

Unusual delay, honestly. The box office is thriving, and has been thriving. And in regard to COVID, cases have gradually declined and/or stabilized. We'll need to wait a few days to see if the current restrictions (which have had little/no impact on the box office, and in fact everything in release has been holding exceptionally well for weeks now) will be extended beyond Feb. 7th, but right now an extension is looking unlikely.

Younger-skewing films have been struggling since families are less likely to come out right now, so I sort of understand the decision in that case, but it seems a little early to delay it.

Unless it's a VERY short delay (talking a week or two here so it can open ahead of Spring Break), they'll have to wait until July or August to release it again (just like last March's film that was delayed to August) because very young-skewing films like Doraemon don't perform well at all in the off-season months of May and June. April is a possibility with Golden Week starting at the end of the month, but they already have (assuming no delays) Detective Conan and Crayon-Shin chan there, so don't see that as a realistic option.

Ah yes. I am hoping they will rescind back this delay by mid-Feb. I remember you mentioned that the current restrictions are only applicable till Feb 7th and hopefully once things go back to normal they will place it back. Its a big franchise and I thought it did respectable numbers in December.

I don't know where to create a new subject about manga... A sub-forum can be about Japan, manga/anime, or comics in general ?

Some news about manga charts : JjK #14 just passed 1M ! That was really fast ! And it seems The Promised Neverland will be back in next top 10 by series, like Monster #8 is back in top 50 too... The power of reprints..^^' there's 550k in circulation now !

Hello Kenji. Thank you for asking the question. You can go to this link
viewforum.php?f=74

here you can click New Topic and create a thread to your liking. Corpse is already planning to create a few threads about Manga numbers soon so we hope to move all these manga related discussions there and focus on Japan BO in this thread.

Do try to go to the link I mentioned OR you can go to Board Index (Link at the top left corner above this thread title) and where you see "Box Office Bash" you will see "Comics and Manga Discussions" under it. Click on that link to go through the list of threads for Manga and comics there

You can go to this link
http://worldofkj.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=74

here you can click New Topic and create a thread to your liking.

Thank you Jack for this! I will be checking the posts! Been searching for forums like these thanks for informing us
