25.0 million [15] - Jan. 26th, 2021

Note: Volumes in release at the time are in [brackets].

I wish Shueisha released more frequent updates for Demon Slayer rather than waiting for each new volume (every 2-3 months) to be released before doing so once it hit 25 million. They should be announcing the 140 million milestone pretty soon (maybe during the Demon Slayer Festival next month), as I believe it's estimated to be nearing that mark with the next reprints in February.

I guess KNY's success was unexpected. Additionally, Jump did not heavily invest in the series when the massive success only came while the manga nearly ended. For example, the stocking issue has occurred since early 2020 until now although they know the series has been on high demand. The official Twitter account and website of KNY only provide cash-grabbing news instead of information about the series. It seems that Shueisha is well-prepared for Jujutsu Kaisen, SpyxFamily, and other new series now. Those successes will be forged and not natural like Kimetsu.

I wonder if Shueisha ever imaged that the movie broke Japan movie history :D I hope new seasons or movies of Kimetsu will come soon before the hype dries up.

I was looking up Attack on Titan, as it's probably the only other series that experienced a major sales growth on a somewhat similar--though I'm pretty sure it's on noticeably smaller--scale following its anime premiere. But I can't find anything before April 2014 (when it reached 30 million), which was a full year after season one premiered. I'm not really expecting there to be circulation figures available before then, but if anyone has them or knows where to find them, please share!

The twitter and website thing is just how Aniplex handles their social media accounts.

Thanks for the Attack on Titan figures, Aiga. It was the pre-2014 years that I couldn't find, so I'll add them to a list and include it in a new post. As expected, it saw a large sales increase following the premiere of the anime, but the sales boost, while significant, isn't anywhere remotely close to Demon Slayer's year-long plus boost or Jujutsu Kaisen's ongoing boost as its anime is still airing.

About France, JjK has sold (not circulation so) 275k since february 2020 and mades the best start of Ki'oon's History... the french "editor". Not the biggest editor in France but still one of them.

There will be a battle between DS and JjK then to be at the top of 2021 manga sales. ^^ We'll see with the first semester if there's a battle anymore...

>>>Right now Kimetsu no Yaiba has sold 17,139,655 (without Gaiden etc...) and Jujutsu Kaisen 6,337,983 (with vol. 0 count from jan' 11 to 17th...) of copies from November 23rd to January 17th).

Woah
Will KnY reign again with at least half the numbers in 2020 or will JJK somehow overtake those numbers?
This is becoming like a shounen plot lmao

Thought many of you would appreciate the above post! Let me know of other series you'd like to see included and I'll likely add them. And please help if you can by providing any data you have on the suggested series, especially the date/month the announcement was made.

I'm already planning to include The Promised Neverland soon, so no need to mention it. Spy x Family, Haikyuu!!, Chainsaw Man (even though it ended recently, it's doing great and the upcoming anime adaptation is likely to propel it higher, so it may be very interesting to track), Fire Force, Dr. Stone (seems to be gradually seeing an uptick) are possible future inclusions, but suggest them or anything else. And I can include a concluded series as well, maybe like Tokyo Ghoul or something. Demon Slayer and Promised Neverland ended last year, and Attack on Titan is ending this year, so that doesn't matter.

And be sure to double check the figures and dates of the posts to ensure they're accurate if you have time and/or know them off hand. And if you know of additional milestones not listed, also share those if you know them. Thanks.

Demon Slayer TV Anime Helped Bring Kansai TV Back From the Red

I just find the talk about the "next" Demon Slayer funny when the series hasn't even reached its peak in sales yet. :funny:

Like we saw with the final volume and also this article confirms, there have been many new manga fans who got into manga through reading Kimetsu and now those people are looking for similar series to read. I wonder how much this has affected the current increase in sales for all series.

Oh by the way it is currently unknown what is going to happen with the February Kimetsu event. They were supposed to start selling tickets early January, but due to current Covid situation in Japan, Aniplex is rethinking what to do with the event. I guess it might be delayed or turned to online event or both.

Curious to know about Assassin Classroom because it started very well ?
And for now one of the running serie to beat is Kingdom in term of global selling maybe ?

It definitely brought in non-manga readers due to its popularity. A lot of people read and buy manga in Japan, but Demon Slayer broke all industry precedent with its (ongoing) performance, just as it did at the box office and anything else that it's touched.

The huge TV ratings (the rebroadcasts and TV specials were achieving 15-20% ratings), and the deal ($$$) that Aniplex/ufotable/Shueisha would likely get from one of the major stations, are reason enough to go forward with another season versus a movie later this year. Although they could do both. Debut season two in the spring/early summer and have it lead into the next movie for next fall/early winter, just like they did with season one and Mugen Train (minus the year wait). The second season will definitely earn a primetime slot, as its rebroadcasts did this past fall/early winter.

I'll post Promised Neverland and Assassination Classroom tonight if I don't run into any roadblocks looking them up. Not too worried about finding figures for The Promised Neverland since it's a more recent series, but Assassination Classroom may take some time. We'll see.

I also want to see how Kingdom has progressed over these past 15 years. I'll look into it tomorrow, but being an older series, it might be difficult to find early figures. It's grown and has maintained pretty remarkable sales in recent years though (Vol. 60, the most recent volume, even received the largest first print-run in its history). And it's had pretty minimal help from its anime adaptation since it's been almost 7 years now since season two ended. COVID put season 3 on hold after just a few episodes last year, but it'll finally resume in April.

Corpse, you can find a lot of data of series circulation here
http://comicdata.blog.fc2.com/

Kingdom trajectory is insane, it was selling fine and got an anime that boosted its sales a bit but the explosion happened when it was featured on AmeTalk in 2015.

This is very useful, thank you! And thanks to the person(s) responsible for compiling all that data. It sort of makes what I'm doing rather moot. :funny: Unfortunately it looks like they haven't really updated much (or at all) since 2018 though. But the earlier data is the most difficult to find, so it's still exceptionally helpful.

I wonder if we should start a separate thread for Manga sales and records in possibly Cinemania or The Water Cooler.

Thanks for your work Corpse ! TPN had a great boost at its end and remembered its anime doesn't have the predicted effect... The manga sells few thousands of copies everyweek and it decreases slowly so still in progress. I guess its really good year 2020 helped for at the box-office of its live action film but I don't think the movie get back many readers...
About comic data, I believe upgrades stopped at june 2019.

Also here the Oricon's Top 10 Weekly Chart by Series (01/18 - 01/24) :

Jack Sparrow you're right about a new thread. ^^

Yes, Eiren released the 2020 data yesterday. I'll have all of that posted today.

2020 was "only" down 45% versus 2019 (the biggest year ever), which is likely the best retention from any major market in the world. Japanese films in particular were strong (and boosted majorly by Demon Slayer), dropping just 23% versus 2019. Meanwhile, Imported films (largely supported by Hollywood) dropped a whopping 71% due to them delaying everything.

The full 2020 Yearly Results will be posted in an hour or two. Quick note: Stand By Me, Doraemon 2 was bumped from 2020 and will be counted as a 2021 release since it earned more than 50% of its cumulative total after December 1st, so it'll be added to the 2021 charts next week.

Post Re: Japan Box Office: 2020 Yearly Results!
2020 Yearly Results:

Yearly Revenue: ¥143.285 billion ($1.38 billion), -45.1%, Weakest Year Since 1999
Yearly Admissions: 106,137,000, -45.5%, Weakest Year Recorded (1955-)

Japanese Film Share: 76.3% - ¥109.276 billion ($1.05 billion), -23.1%, Weakest Year Since 2011
Imported Film Share: 23.7% - ¥34.009 billion ($327 million), -71.4%, Weakest Year Since 1973

# Of Japanese Films Released: 506, -27.6%, Lowest Since 2011
# Of Imported Films Released: 511, -13.2%, Lowest Since 2012
# Of Overall Films Released: 1,017, -21.7%, Lowest Since 2012
# Of Films Grossing ¥1 Billion+ ($10 million): 25, -61.5%, Lowest Since 1997

Number of Theater Screens: 3,616, +0.01%, Highest Screen Count Since 1968
Average Ticket Price: ¥1,350 ($12.98), +0.01%, New Record! (beating 2019)

*2020 marks the thirteenth-consecutive year (2008-) that Japanese Films earned more than Imported Films.
*Percent changes versus 2019.

And note that 2019 was the biggest year ever in revenue, and the most attended since 1971, so the 2020 percentage drops are truly coming off the highest of highs last year. But overall... I'd say this was a pretty good year, all things considered. Despite the imported share dropping over 70%, 2020 still managed to a drop of 45% year-on-year, and still managed to sell over 100 million admissions.

Final Totals for the 25 films that earned ¥1 billion or more will be posted a bit later.

“We were like gods at the dawning of the world, & our joy was so bright we could see nothing else but the other.”
“There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man.”
“You have to pretend you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can't carry on at all.”
"Paper is dead without words / Ink idle without a poem / All the world dead without stories."
